Is my 14mo weaning?
« on: December 22, 2012, 11:11:36 am »
Hi all.

I am down to two BFs a day (although there are times when I have to work at night and skip a feed). Been back to work for three months but the feeding has been going beautifully. Until now. In the past 24 hours, DD2 has been completely disinterested in feeding. She's gone from feeding fine to not wanting to feed at all.

Is this the start of the end? I fed DD1 for two years and she would have been happy to keep going so have zero experience on whether this is just a glitch or not. For the moment, I am just following her lead and seeing what happens. Is that the right approach?

Any advice most appreciated! Thank you...

My LO has gone through phases of being less interested, but always comes back to it and is still feeding now at almost 2. Is she teething at all? Could be a bit uncomfortable for her maybe. I'd keep offering and see what happens over the next couple of days - maybe pump a little if you're worried about supply.

Another thought: is AF back yet? Mine wasn't back til DD was 14/15 months and I had a dip in supply then, which made it seem like my LO wasn't interested. It lasted a couple of days and then we were back to normal :)

It is possible that she's starting to wean.  If you're offering and she's refusing, it could be a glitch (as Nuala said) or could be the beginning of her stopping.  Each LO is different and will stop BF at different times.

Like PP said, you could keep on offering for a few days and see what happens.  You've done amazingly to get to 14m :)

If you want to wean then it could be the perfect time to take advantage of her lack of interest. If you would rather not then I would certainly keep offering, perhaps the moment she wakes still in the dark nursery she might be more interested.
I find my DS2 can be so easily distracted by DS1 but he is more focussed in a quiet room by ourselves.

Well done on getting to 14mo :)

Yes, if you're ready to wean, now might be a time when it would be easier for both of you - sorry, I took from your original post that you wanted to keep feeding, didn't mean to imply that you should keep going if you don't want to :) 14 months is a great gift to your LO.

Thanks all for the advice. I knew you would have some answers for me!

TBH, I don't really feel ready to give up BF yet. I would love to get to two years again if possible but that may be up to her...

But she did feed this morning so it may have just been a glitch. I guess I will just continue to follow her lead.

She's not teething but she is going through a WW so that could be contributing to it.

Thanks again for your help and I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas.

Glad she fed this morning. Merry Christmas to you and your family too.
