What is that sound?!
« on: December 22, 2012, 16:28:51 pm »
I went to feed my daughter expressed Breast milk (just pumped it).  She was crying that she was hungry (timing was off for my pumping), and about 1 ounce into it you can hear hear belly gurgling and then she starts crying in pain.  What is this from?  I've heard this before when bottle feeding.  We use dr brown bottles, level 1 nipple.  She's 12 weeks.  Currently on Zantac.  It's not all the time that we hear this with the bottle but as if the last 2 weeks we have.

Love some ok insight in this and how to make her more comfy.

Thanks!

DD's tummy used to do this when we were BF.  I just put it down to her gulping down the milk and that it was making its transit through to her stomach.  That said, DD didn't cry with it.

Perhaps at that stage, stop feeding and go for a burp?

I wonder if she takes in too much air and like Amanda says needs burping. Do you have her sitting up a bit when you feed or lying flat? Sitting up more can help and ensuring the milk fills the teat.

I'm definitely holding her in a reclined sitting position and making sure the nipple of the bottle is full.  I'll keep an eye open to see if it happens again.

Maybe if the flow is faster than she is used to with the breast she is just taking too much milk in too short a space of time. Perhaps a break or two mid bottle would help.

Even if the teat is full of milk, if she's not getting a good seal around it, she could be taking in air there (I hope that makes sense!)

So I don't hear the gurgling anymore with the bottle so long as I lay her on a blanket on the floor and giver her the bottle (kind if like side lying nursing but with a bottle)

What would that indicate?  Poor latch?  Because if I bottle or breastfeed in a cross cradle or any upright position for her, I hear the gurgling.

Ugh!

I'm not sure it's an indication of anything in particular.  As I said, I just presumed it was about gravity when DD's tummy made that sound.
