8wo eating less??
« on: December 31, 2012, 04:37:48 am »
Ds will be 8 weeks on Tuesday.  He was ebf for 6 weeks then we switched to formula for a number of reasons and he did great...downed 4 oz every 3 hrs from the getgo and was emptying the bottles.  4 days ago I started offering him 5 oz at each feeding, and at most feedings he was draining those bottles, too.  Well the past 2 days he hasn't been eating as much.  He is maybe taking 3 oz every 3 hours!  Any idea what could be going on?

I should also mention he has reflux (although its gotten much better with Zantac and since we stopped breast feeding).  Sometimes, not always, he seems uncomfortable and squirms a lot when he starts to not want to finish his bottle.

He may just want a bit longer between feeds ;)

Did spacing out feeds help? My DS is a bit like this too ::) if I wait longer though he takes a bit more but is sick and unsettled. I think its his way of self regulating to control his pain YK?

What formula is he on, and what flow teats?

Sometimes, not always, he seems uncomfortable and squirms a lot when he starts to not want to finish his bottle.

This suggests to me that the reflux is playing a part - my DD halved her feeds overnight around 8/9 weeks which is when her reflux really kicked in.

What weight is he and how much zantac?

He is on .3 ml Zantac and we are using Similac Advance.  We use Tommee Tippee and Advent bottles, both teat 2.  Should I try spacing his feeds?  And if so how much?

How much does he weigh? Zantac is very weight sensitive, 0.3ml (assuming your zantac is 15mg per ml) is less than the bottom dose for a  3Kg baby so I would see your Dr and ask about increasing the dose first. If you can tell us his weight we can tell you what the dose range is and you can speak to your Dr about it.

8 weeks is very young to be spacing feeds out - if it is the reflux then he is unlikely to take bigger feeds anyway so he'll be going longer on less oz and taking less overall in 24 hours.

I can say after trying this too (spacing feeds a bit more) for my refluxer didn't encourage him to take me either and his reflux is quite controlled ATM.

As Laura says, the Zantac dose is very low, it is unlikely helping at all :( if you can get a review and increase things may improve a bit :D
