PD lead to possible AP with Night wakings- HELP!!
« on: January 11, 2013, 04:54:08 am »
Hi All,
We are HUGE believers in the baby whisperer methods- they have all worked for us up until this point.  My 14 month old started to wake at night- this has been for a couple of months now- in between we have traveled for the holidays, have had guests in and out of town, teething, and have had colds on and off.  Every time we are back to normal routines once a visitor has left, cold is gone, or travel is over.  For the most part when any of these are going on we still stick to our daily routine, eating, naps, and bed time, but bedtime isn't as easy as the rest.  So I read what to do to get us sleeping through the night again and did PD and skipped the PU part.  Then would put my hand on her chest or back until she calmed down...  longer story short, she now wakes at night stands up and screams and cries, I come in and PD- if I move my hand off of her she gets up and cries and screams... so I need to leave my hand on her until she has fallen asleep.  This can go on for 10 minutes multiple times at night, or up to 4 hours or every hour, it varies.  I am so lost on what to do now.  I believe I fell into AP with the hand resting on her that I now don't know what to do to correct this.   I am not sure she knows how to self sooth anymore...????
PLEASE HELP!!!!  I have not had a full nights sleep since the end of OCTOBER!!!!  I am SLEEPY!
Thank you for any advice at all- I will try anything :)

Can you tell us what her routine is like at the moment?

Wake up
Naps
Bedtime

We will see what we can suggest then! In the meantime have a look at this link
Walk In/Walk Out vs. The Gradual Withdrawal Method (HOW TO CHOOSE)

Hi Laura,
Thanks for responding.  Our schedule is as follows:
7/7:30 wake up- breakfast, get dressed, activity
10/10:30 Snack
11:30/12- nap (2-3 hours)
2/3 Wake from nap- Lunch and activity
Dinner 5/6 depending on nap
play, bath time, stories
7:30 bed time

One other thing- could it be possible separation anxiety as well?  she and I are together all day.  She has also been getting scared of things lately- like the TV screen when the TV is off....

THANK YOU!!!

Did you have a look at the link I posted - which method do you think would be better for you all?

You routine looks ok - I would maybe push the nap out a bit so it is at least 5 hours from wake time. I could well be SA/ developmental so being there to reassure her may be the way forward - have a look at the link!

Hi Laura,
Thanks so much for the advice!  She has slept through 2 nights in a row so far!  (fingers crossed, knock on wood!)  I went with the gradual withdrawal method.  I think with a combination of things- molar pain subsiding, cold is clearing up, etc...  has helped, but either way, the method worked!  Thank you so much for your help!  I have a friend who is having issues with her 18 month old and sleep- I am going to pass on this advice to her.   Hopefully it will help!
Anna
