Yellow milk discharge
« on: January 13, 2013, 10:16:43 am »
Hi ladies,
I urgently need some help. I know this is gross but I found yellow mucus on my breast pad today. What could be the reason? I do have some headache and I suffered mastitis twice when DD was 3wo. Should I go to the doctor or express and see if it gets better? What is the yellow mucus?

Could it maybe have been a blocked duct that has just cleared itself and what your seeing is old milk?

Not sure, but didn't want to read and run!

I would check with your dr as pus can be indicative of mastitis or an abscess. If you've had mastitis it could be left from that but I would get it checked .

Agree with the PPs and if you still have the pad you might want to take that with you

The earliest appointment I can get is tmr, will that be too late? Should I give up breastfeeding since this is the third time I'm having mastitis, and I really hate the idea of taking antibiotics...but then I feel this massive guilt to feed my dd formula...

((((hugs))))  I think if it is mastitis you're supposed to keep the breast drained, right?  Someone else will know more.

Yes, this.  It can get worse if you don't drain the breast.  Do you have any other symptoms of mastitis right now?
You can't hurt your baby by feeding when you have mastitis.  Can you express a little bit to make sure the milk looks "normal"?

Recurring mastitis can be a sign of something else, like a poor latch -- have you had someone look at your latch to make sure that your LO is draining the breast effectively?

I express and feed her expressed milk. I have fever and chill so I am pretty sure it is mastitis again....DD doesn't latch on well, that's why EBM is our only option.

Can you not get an emergency appt? I know here we have out of hours service. Best to start the antibiotics asap.
I know I always struggle to empty the breast with the pump. Have you tried a different pump or flange?

If you are struggling with the pump, you might want to think about combing with hand expressing. You can be a bit more specific about which ducts are being activated, for want of a better word, and use the pump to suck.

It does sound like mastitis. Hot compresses before you express to get things flowing, cold ones afterwards to reduce inflamation and ibuprofen if you can take it too. Hope you get to the dr soon
