nap help for 12 week old
« on: January 20, 2013, 05:16:16 am »
I am desperate for some help with my 12 week old.  I am working on implementing the routine and really waiting to teach independent sleep until 14 weeks (2 weeks from now!!).

His awake time is 1 hr and 30 min. He falls asleep pretty easily for his nap but the only way I can get him to extend his nap is hhh holding him for the second half. Its starting to drive me nuts holding him for so long. Is there anything I can doto help him extend his nap?

thank you! !

Hi and welcome to the site.

You don't have to wait till 14 weeks to teach lo independant sleep if you use ssh pat which is where you shush and pat your lo simultaneously whilst in the cot (or whilst holding initially if Lo is very unsettled) and you can use till calm and see if lo falls asleep independantly. If lo cries just repeat method as often as necessary.if lo is struggling to fall asleep then you can use ssh pat till lo is asleep (it will become a prop but is very easy to wean)

If you post your easy as EAS we can take a look at your routine

In meantime if lo is giving 45 min naps which can be UT or developmental in latter case you can extend using these methods

How do I address habitual wakings? (wake-to-sleep and other methods)

Here a links for teaching sleep

Teaching Sleep to Babies of 3-5 months (and the 45 min nap)

What does a good wind down consist of (Includes 4S ritual)

What is soothing and when can I expect my baby to self soothe?

What is a lovie, and why should my baby have one?

And here are links of sleep and a times

Typical Amounts of Day and Night Sleep

Is my baby ready to increase his ‘A’ time? (incl. 'A' times for younger babies)

I know it's a lot of reading but it will answer your questions and lessen the panic a little. Hth!
