Dairy allergy and poop
« on: January 24, 2013, 13:42:17 pm »
Hey, it's been awhile since I posted here but for background info my son ( almost 2) is severely allergic to dairy and nuts.  I breastfed him on a dairy free diet until I got pregnant again when he was 13 months old.  Now my daughter is 2 months old and I've been watching her like a hawk for possible symptoms of the dreaded dairy allergy. My son started with green watery stools and developed eczema and hives around 3 months and now my daughter also has green, watery and often slimy poop with no seedy texture.  I'm suspecting dairy even though I restrict my dairy to about a cup of milk a day and pizza about once a week (before my son was born dairy was featured heavily in my diet).

What do you guys think?  Am I being paranoid or should I go ahead and drop dairy now before it gets worse like it did for my son?  LO is otherwise a happy go-lucky baby that doesn't fuss a whole lot.

I would remove dairy for a while and see if it makes a difference. If it does you could then try adding it back in. If symptoms appear again then you would no for sure. If you remove dairy and the symptoms do not improve then you will know that it is not the issue

Hi, a cup of milk is a fair amount TBH. I would drop it totally - even if for a week or two - as you should see an improvement by then if it is the milk. x

So about 36 hours dairy free and the poops are already mustard yellow and less frequent - coincidence?

Nope - it's the dairy for sure.

Sounds like dairy intollerance honey :( :-*
BTW - my LO is MSPI and I had only milk in my coffee and a small bit of cheese...it still made him miserable.

My DD is 14 weeks old and I pretty much cut out dairy from a few days old as I noticed butter/milk ect made her really fussy. The other day I ate eggs and my DD did an explosive dark green watery poo then after a few poops with dark green black specs in them. I'm assuming this is the dairy? She also has started with eczema so I'm going to try cutting out dairy completely. Does dairy intolerance disappear in children as they get older or is it something ill always have to cut out of her diet?

Sounds like your LO also has an egg allergy ;) typically if only dairy eggs are ok I think?

Yes dairy and eggs are 2 different things. It is possible to be allergic/intollerant to both though. It definitely sounds like your dd reacted to the eggs.

Emily, it depends.  I know for allergies kids often outgrow dairy allergies by the age of five.  My son sees a professional allergist and will get tested annually to see if we can reintroduce dairy or peanuts; he tested neg for peanuts the last visit but she said to wait one more year to see if be still tests negative and then do an oral challenge.  If you suspect a dairy allergy I would completely cut it from your diet.

Interesting thanks for your comments.
Any reccomedations on what to use for the eczema ? Will this go on its own by cutting out dairy?
