Should i lose the Dream Feed
« on: January 24, 2013, 14:32:11 pm »
Hi,

My LO is just over 5 months and we have been taking solids for 5 weeks. She has porride with fruit purree for breakfast, 2oz of veg at lunch and 1oz of protein and veg for dinner.

My question is that during the day she has 4 bottles, she never seems very hungry in th morning and will only take 4oz then usually 6oz at 11am, 5oz at 3pm, 6oz at bed then 7oz at her DF.

I was wondering if is should start weaning her DF to see if she will take more milk for her morning bottle?

She seems to take her biggest bottle at her dream feed.

I would give it a try... maybe reduce the DF to 5 ozs to start?

Just be sure that her total daily intake stays around 24-26 ozs at a minimum.

Let's just start with offering 5 ozs for now and see what happens.  It might be enough of a drop to get her to take her first milk in the AM again ;)  Give the new DF amount a week to see if it makes a change.

Hi honey, well i know its not been a full week yet (its been 5 days) but just thought i would update you. She has been taking 5oz for her DF but still only taking 4oz for her morning bottle. Last night she only took 3oz of her DF and still slept until 7am and once again only took 4oz for her morning bottle.

Any suggestions or just keep going with th 5oz a bit longer?

hmmm... well, 5 days should show a change, but if not, I would almost wonder if she just isn't a fan of eating as soon as she wakes??  we went through a few phases like that - I would get DD up, get the coffee pot started, feed the pets, then do her bottle (about 30 mins after we got up).. maybe try that?

Hi my DS was the same and started to take small morning feed, we just dropped DF down to 3oz for a week then went cold turkey one night! He didn't wake up and then got back to full morning bottle! He did go off am feed for a bit around 6 months as well but soon went back on it!  :)

Thanks honey.

I think i will try that then. What is the worst that can happen, she will wake during the night for a feed, if she does then I'll just go back to the DF for a bit longer  :)

I'm with Zoe - maybe just cut it right back...

I admit, DD was waking at 430am for a NF by 18 weeks... and would rarely go back to sleep without an hour of rocking her... so I cut that feed down to 3 ozs (from 5-6) and held for a couple days... she only lasted 2 nights of waking for a 3 ozs bottle before deciding it wasn't worth it ;)

Just a thought - neither of my refluxers were interested in their first bottle when their reflux was flaring up and I know you posted about her being more pukey at the moment. I think it's to do with lying down with the acid all night.

So maybe i should give her an hour or so after waking to let it settle before trying to feed her?

So i have not been feeding her in the morning until she has been awake for an hour and she still only takes 4oz, however last night she only took 2oz of her DF so maybe she is just not needing it anymore, what do you think?

What is her total intake for the day (including night)?

So long as she is over 24 ozs, she should be fine.  Ideally, she would be 24-30ozs a day.

I would just stop it and see what happens, 2oz won't make much difference I'm sure! The worst you'll get is a wake up call. :-)
