Re-introducing dairy to BF 9 month old with MPI????
« on: January 27, 2013, 01:09:27 am »
Just wondering what suggestions anyone has for reintroducing dairy to my 10 month old?  I was told by our family Dr to just try every couple of months??? Try how? lol

Should I have dairy?
Should I give her a little bit of formula that has dairy in it?
Should I give her Yogurt? How much?

Sorry for so many qustions :)

The last time I had dairy (which was a piece of my wedding cake yum!) She was 4.5 months old, she had a rxn that peaked about 3 days after then was ok by day 5

I gave her 2 tsp of yogurt about a month ago and later in the day she had a rash so I didn't try again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank u

With my MPI DS I didn't try introducing dairy until 12mo. I gave him a teaspoon of yoghurt, and he reacted to it (eczema flare-up).
I tried again at 18mo, this time it took a bit more yoghurt to get a reaction but it was still there. Tried again at 2yo with cheese this time, same reaction.

Every 2 months is a bit too soon IME, you need to allow the gut to mature a bit longer in between trials.

My GP and HV and Ped were all perfectly happy for me to trial him every 6 months starting from 12mo  :)

Hi, if you introduced yoghurt before and the worst you got was a rash then I would go for that again.  :)

I think I will try the yogurt again. The only thing that makes me hesitant is that the allergic eczema she had while we were trying to figure out the allergy was sooooo bad!!! Her poor little eyes were almost swollen shut :( but that was over weeks of it building up before I finally figured out that I should cut out the dairy......and she was only 5 weeks old.

Thankyou for replying! It is so nice to have people that understand to chat with.
My doctor thought I was nuts and kept telling me it was baby acne.  It eventually got so bad I was determined to figure it out......thank god I did :)

It is very bad when they are babies and doctors think you are crazy. We spent 24 hours on a hospital ward having every test under the sun when Olly was 3 weeks old after vominting after having had formula. Not once did they suggest it was an allergy although we kept telling them it was only after formula top ups he was sick  >:(

Olly too had AWFUL skin. So bad I didn't take him into work when he was very young as I was embaressed  :'( It really was like acne - those horrid white pimples all over his cheeks.  :'(

Awwwww....poor little guy!!

Mia still has never even been referred to a specialist :(  2 doctors told me that it was very unlikely that the rxn was from dairy but everytime I drank milk and then nursed, she would vomit.  Over a few weeks of this her eczema and tummy pain got soooo bad I didn't know what to do.  I gave her a small amount of Benadryl against Drs orders and her face cleared a little.....the only thing that made sense was dairy so I stopped having it and anything with whey or casein and voila!! Within a week she was back to her happy self!!!

How do I know if it's an allergy or an itolerance?   Do babes usually grow out of it?

I'm assuming it's an itolerance as like I said I tried yogurt and just a rash starting again and because it took days of it building up in her poor little gut before it got really bad the first time.

Once again thanks a ton.....this is such a wonderful forum :)

How do I know if it's an allergy or an intolerance?   Do babes usually grow out of it?

Well if you can get a referral when she is about a year old they may do skin prick tests if she is still showing symptoms of an allergy. Has she stopped being sick now with any dairy?

And YES they can grow out of them. Olly no longer has an official allergy and we are currently testing for MPI. Over Christmas he was having bits of processed dairy and had eczema and night wakings so we took it back out again. Need to test again to be sure. If he is MPI then there is stilla very good chance he will putgrow that too x

She hasn't had any dairy lately......when I did give her a very small amount of yogurt it was just the eczema that showed up but I stopped right after I saw the rash....that was probably 6 weeks ago.  Before that she had dairy at about 4.5 months old as I had eaten a piece of my wedding cake so she got it through my milk and had the eczema, NWs and a bad diaper rash :( No vomiting though.

So many hugs hun - you are not crazy.  Milk allergies/intolerances are far more common that most realize.

I would hold off until she is a year and then drink a bit of milk yourself and see if she reacts...

Mia is 10 months old today  :o

Anyway,  we are going on holiday to an all inclusive in Mexico in a month which is why I wanted to try Mia on dairy because I have a feeling it will be very difficult to find out ingredients in things there!  I really don't want her to have a rxn while away.  So, my DH had made Kraft Dinner (lol) for himself on Weds afternoon and talked me into eating a bowl!  (Not my first choice, but hey!! lol)  So that was Weds about 2 and so far so good  :)  She had a bit of gas and a smellier than normal diaper today but other than that seems fine!!!  Especially considering how badly she reacted when we figured this all out.

I am so happy but don't want to push it..........do you think this means she has outgrown it and what should I do know? I really don't want to upset her sensitive tummy and feel better about eating away :)

Thanks again ladies

There isn't a tonne of milk in KD ;)  I would try drinking 1/2 cup of milk and see what happens...

remember, milk via mommy may seem okay, but dairy into LO could be very different!

Thankyou :)

I wanted to try via my milk because she reacted badly that way before when I had eaten curry that my dad made and forgot to check the ingredients on the sauce and it just had skim milk and was at the bottom of the ingredient list.  So I'm glad she didn't react even though it was just a little :)

I will try the milk and let you know how it goes!

Last time it didn't show up for a couple days but I am so happy there has been no symptoms so far!!

Thanks for all the support :)  Now to work on sleep lol
