To BBB or not BBB, that is the question...
« on: January 30, 2013, 19:38:12 pm »
What do you think, ladies? Should I move x to a BBB? He is nearly 21 months and his sleep isn't great - I remember that e started sleeping a lot better when we moved her to a bgb at 18 months and I wondered if it would help x. My reservation is that he moves around so much while he is asleep, and he went through a major phase of standing up in his cot when he learned to stand up and I worry that he is going to get into the habit of getting out of bed when he can. Neither of the girls ever got out of bed - still don't, in fact! - so I never had to deal with that and I'm not sure that I want to.  :P

Well, it would be super early for me, but it has worked for others at this age.  I moved Allie when she was about 28 months and she started sleeping better as she was thrashing around lots and bumping into the side of her crib.  So, if that's the case, it might help.  To be honest though, it would scare me at this age.  :)

I would be nervous at doing it so young as well!  Though he is not that far off of 2, and DS1 was just 2 when we moved him, DS2 was about 27/28 months.  I would probably wait it out a little bit longer though.

Not brave enough here for sure.....

I think we took the sides of DSs cot at about age 2, and it certainly didn't help his sleep. Didn't change it much at all if I am honest. He was a very active sleeper and still ended up kicking duvets off and ending up in alsorts of crazy positions. Took him a while to start coming to me in the night though - he would always just shout - but did come in at the crack of dawn with a marvellous EW  ::).

DD is still in the cot  :P. She sounds like your girls - she never stands - never even sits - she loves lying in bed  :). We will have to sort her out soon though!

Actually what helped DS was being in a real BBB - his cabin bed that obviously has a short wooden guard all the way round the edge - that degree of being contained helps keep him under the duvet!! I might hang on until DD is 3+ so she can go straight to a cabin bed the same.

We didn't move dd till the end of this October.  She is 3 and 1/2 and large for her age and to be honest the only reason we moved her was good old Hurricane Sandy and the huge tree on that side of the house.  Even though I'm expecting number 2 I would have loved to keep dd in it for as long as possible lol.  She like your girls LOVED her crib though and even now in the bgb has just started getting out of the bed but thats more due to my MIL then anything else lol.

Spencer is the same, went to a BGB at 16 months no problem...Masyn went at 2.5 and I really should have kept her in longer, but it was becoming dangerous with her climbing skills!  Last one will be in a crib forever!!!

Emma was in the cot till 3.5! She still calls us in the morning in her BGB, never gets out.
Oscar broke the underside of his cot at 23 mths and moved to a BBB - worst move ever. We bought an IKEA cot to tide us over and put him back in till 31 mths ;-) He was a climber and a mover in his sleep - still ends up at the foot of his bed very often at almost 7 yrs!

Eliot went into a bed about a month ago (i.e. 22 months).  his sleep is rubbish, but it's no worse in a bed than it was in the cot!  He is in a cot bed and has a bed guard on one side, so there's actually only about 12 " that he can get out of , so there's no danger of falling out.  Ben went into a bed at 25 months, and Zach at 23 months.  We weathered the climbing out and running for the door.  They both did it, but with a few evenings sat on the landing, they got the hang of it (and dh was always more effective at getting them to stay in bed - he'd be up there for about 20 minutes, while I'd be all evening!)  Bryony also went into a bed at 25 months, but like your girls, she never got out!

So from me it's a 'yes, if you think it might help'!  We didn't have much of a choice with the boys - Ben was climbing oout the cot every ten minutes at bedtime, and Zach spent a night throwing himself out over and over and hurting himself.  Eliot started screaming hysterically when I put him in the cot, so we decided it would be less painful to go for it.  :)

Can you try and then go back to the cot if it doesn't work?  I know friends who have convertible cribs so once they switched it would be a right pain to go back but when we switched DS over at 18 months and DD over at 16 months the crib was still available just in case.  DD always stood in her crib and bounced around.  She's much happier in her BGB for whatever reason.  We have a really tall side rail and the bed is against a wall with a head and footboard.  And barely any getting out and no standing.  Depends on the LO, I guess.  IMO it couldnt' hurt to try...

Lol, becky!
I guess it is still pretty early, and I am kind of clutching at straws. It made such a difference to e's sleep that I can't help but wonder if it might sort X out. I'm also sort of thinking that if I move him now while his sleep isn't great then it won't be the end of the world if it deteriorates while he adjusts, but if he finally starts sleeping well and we break him by moving him to a BBB then I will be devastated! :P

We'll wait for a bit, I think. Maybe I'll try him sleeping on the mattress in his room once or twice to see how he copes with that - I don't think it would be easy to switch him back to the cot once we have changed it for a bed, so I'll need to be sure that we want to do it.

Nini - I found the transition really easy for both the girls, so if you are ready to move your ds you should just go for it.

LOL!! Clazzat- we havn't done it yet- but i've heard enough stories of it being ok at this age that i'm thinking of trying it! It does come down to the child- and possibly your reasoning. I'm holding off because my main reason to move him is the fact that i found a really nice set of bedding and cute toddler bed ::)

I showed Megan a picture of a big bed today (although obviously she knows what one is really!), and later in the car she said she wanted a big bed now.

I told her to ask Daddy  :P.

The seed is sown, if she really wants one she can have one, otherwise we will build it up over the next few weeks and then make the switch.

If only I had any degree of hope that it would sort out her NWings. She is very articulate, so I know they are dreams/ nightmare related, so I have no hope at all. Last night I had her sobbing about not being able to colour something in at 10.30pm.... No hope at all.
