Crazy crying before naps - normal?
« on: February 02, 2013, 17:20:21 pm »
MY LO is 6 weeks old. Started routine 8 days ago. She naps well 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours at 8, 11, and 2.  Usually 30 minutes at 5.  She took well to the routine and eats well (3 to 4 oz at each feeding, except for 8 pm then it is 2 oz or so).  But, starting with the 11 am nap she cries hysterically right after being swaddled (or during swaddling) and as I start the shhhh while holding her.  The cries last 2 minutes to 10 minutes (progressively get longer as the day wears on.) by 7 pm she cries for 20 min plus until we give up and just put her in a swing (which is out of her room and in a lit up area, she calms as soon as we carry her out of her room.) She stays awake enjoying the swing until 8pm feeding (this has happened the last five days).  After she eats at 8 pm, she immediately falls asleep.  It is almost impossible to give her a dream feed because she is so deep asleep (we manged 2 times so far and each time was hard and she only took 1 ounce).  She usually doesn't wake to eat again until between 3:00 am and 5:00 am.  Is this hysterical crying normal as the sleeping routine starts? and is it ok that she goes for 7 - 9 hours without eating at such a young age?  thanks for your help.  Afraid we are making our baby hate bedtime.

Hi and welcome :)

Can you post a typical day in EAS format for us, eg

WU and E: 7am
A
S: 8 - 9.30
E: 10am ...etc

The average A time for this age is around 1hr or a little more - but if the first nap is short, you will need to reduce the next A slightly to avoid OT. I wonder if she's gradually building up OT as the day goes on and that's why she's so unsettled in the evening.

Any signs of discomfort?

If she's feeding well during the day, I wouldn't be worried about the long stretch at night - lucky you ;) My LO would do six hours from a couple of weeks old. Just be aware that she is likely to go through growth spurts where she needs more frequent night feeds, and it's still normal to have 1-2 night feeds for several months yet.

Thank you... I think the OT is building over the day as naps are not always long.  We are using the swing more in the evening and just resigned ourselves that she will be fussy for a couple of hours.  We also stopped swaddling both arms in (leave one out) and that has made swaddle time much more pleasant.
