Books for 2-4 year old girls..
« on: February 02, 2013, 21:21:14 pm »
What are your ladies favourites??

I LOVE kids books, but I find the girly stuff is often a bit sickly and boring so far  :P. I'm obviously reading the wrong stuff, but I want the ballet without the nausea!

Any ideas please ladies  :) :-*

E loves, loves, loves this book!! And I enjoy reading it even though I must have read it 200+ times  :o! It's simple, but so endearing.

This one is also popular here with both of mine http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/1847389562/ref=aw_cr_item_title?qid=1359841324&sr=8-1

i always find it hard to predict which books my two will like though and often end up buying books that we have borrowed from the library.  they both also like

Sorry, just reread your post-maybe these ones aren't quite girly enough!

Charlotte'sfavourite books are still Hairy Maclary. She also loves lots of other classics, e.g. The Tiger who came to tea, lots of Julia Donaldson  etc. To be honest we haven't bought any girly books as such. Maybe as girly as she has is Peppa Pig which I can't stand!

Listening in as always after new books! So pleased C loves them as I do too!

"Dogs don't do ballet" is great!
Don't really do girly here especially...

DD tends to just read DS's old books, which are more gender neutral (although contains lots of Thomas books!)

She likes Julia Donaldson too and Octonauts (or 'hat hats' as she calls them) and Peppa Pig.

Do you have Angelina Ballerina books by you?  They're pretty cute and not as nauseating as some!
There's also a series called "Ella Bella Ballerina" which tells the stories behind a lot of the famous ballets.  We've read some and I find them to be pretty cool.

I was also going to suggest "Dogs Don't do Ballet" it is funny and cute and not girly so Jacob would like it too, it is about a dog called Biff who wants to be a ballerina and its theme is about being different and proud.

The Fancy Nancy picture books are girly without being nauseous, but are maybe for 4+ as they are about a young school age, she loves everything fancy and teaches French words and other vocab:

Not ballet, but the Winnie the Witch stories are a big hit with my girl! I agree with anything by Julia Donaldson too! I love this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Once-There-Giants-Martin-Waddell/dp/0744578361/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1359880591&sr=1-1. anything else by  Martin Waddell is good too!

Liz here is a list of a variety of really good books for kids. I went through it and chose several for DS for Christmas when I did the 24 books for Advent.
http://www.positivelypositive.com/2012/05/17/50-top-childrens-books-with-a-positive-message/

There are lots of them that are too old for her (like in the 6-8+ age) and many that are boys books and so on, but I think there are some really great ones that she will like if you go through the list!!

The reason for the girly is just to keep the balance - she loves pink and ballet - but spends most of her time playing Dinosaurs and Octonauts!

Dogs don't do Ballet is one that they do both like  :). And Winnie the Witch - yes - they both like those and I could def get another one.

I have a ton of gender neutral stuff  :), and obviously that works best overall.

I HATE reading Octonaut books  >:( >:(. They are so annoyingly written. Too wordy and waffly. Yet I end up reading them again and again and again.

Will check out the suggestions - great - thanks all  :-* :-*

Emma loved Charlie and Lola books at this age - could relate easily as the sib issue was similar....we just got them from my school library at the time.

Nowadays Emma loves rhyming books - so anything with a rhyme at the end...at all...and if it doesn't rhyme, she makes it rhyme!

DD enjoys the Olivia books (she has Olivia and Olivia Saves the Circus) and Madeline (I find the original Madeline is more age appropriate, in Madeline's Rescue Madeline falls into the Seine and almost drowns...and in Madeline and the Bad Hat there's a neighbour boy who makes a guillotine and has to get saved from a dog attack...They are older books so maybe that sort of stuff was ok to put in kids books then  :-\ )  Both series are about girls but not too girly :)

Oh I *love* the octonauts  ;D, but just find the books not very well written-I suppose because the stories are just copied from the tv rather than being written specifically for print.

Some of the books came first (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Octonauts) so might be worth having a look at them

At 3 DD's fav book was Polly's Pink Pyjamas by Vivian French http://www.amazon.com/Pollys-Pink-Pajamas-Vivian-French/dp/0763648078#reader_0763648078, girly but not too girly.

She also loved (and still does) The Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=the+paper+dolls

Down the back of the chair by Magaret Mahey http://www.amazon.com/Down-Back-Chair-Margaret-Mahy/dp/0618693955#reader_0618693955
