Dream feed - how/when to eliminate
« on: February 21, 2013, 12:10:17 pm »
Hi there

My baby girl was 7 months yesterday and we are starting to think about eliminating the dream feed but not sure how to do it.

Her routine as follows:

7.30 wake up + 5oz bottle
8.30 solids (cereal or mashed banana)
10.30-12.00 nap
12.00 4-5oz bottle
1.00 solids (yogurt + finger food (attempting!!))
2.30-4.00 nap
4.00 4-5oz bottle
5.30 solids (jar or home made baby food + desert - this is alway the meal where she eats the most)
7.15 bottle (lately this bottle has become smaller and smaller because she eats so much dinner, sometimes only 60-100 ml of milk. Surely this is the bottle to increase if we are to cut the dream feed but she just refuses any more!)
7.25 bath and bedtime routine
10.00-10.30 dream feed 5-6 oz (biggest bottleof the day?!?!)

We have tried just cutting it once which was a big mistake, she woke up hungry. She is very hit and miss with sleeping through but we have not had to do night feeds other than dream feed for a good few months now.

The dream feed is the only bottle she seems interested in, all the others we have to 'forcefully' offer her (obviously not forcing her but for want of a better word....it is hard work getting her to take a bottle! )

Any help/suggestions much appreciated!

If she is doing well with solids, I would just move her routine around a bit...

At this age, we were doing this:

Wake 6am - bottle 6ozs
Breakkie solids ~ 730/8am
Nap 930-11am
Lunch 12noon - bottle 6 ozs and then solids right after
Nap 230-4pm
Dinner 5pm - bottle 6 ozs and solids right after
BT bottle 8 ozs 745pm, BT 8pm.

The other thing you could do is offer the bottle at wake up and solids about an hour later for lunch/dinner - this would keep things spaced well so she gets a good amount of calories in the day.  The trick is making sure there is enough time dinner solids that she will still have a good feed before bedtime.
