Started rice cerial - unsure of if its ok for him
« on: February 22, 2013, 00:02:14 am »
Not sure if this needs to be moved...it's in between :-\

We have introduced solids (reluctantly) to T because the pead and dr are insisting we give it a go to help T reflux

So I've given a tiny tiny amount one am, then skipped a day, then a small bit in the am. Then skipped a day. Today he took a little more - maybe 2/3 tsp at midday.

So he is ok in himself. Certainly no worse. But I have noticed a bit more mucus in his poops? - I guess I'm not sure if I should keep going or stop? - would this possibly be expected as his gut gets used to it? Or no way, stop ;)

If YOU want to be introducing solids early to him, then I personally would keep with it for a day or two and give yourself more time to be able to judge "mucus levels".
But if you don't feel this is the right thing to be doing, here is a good excuse to stop ;)

What is your mommy gut telling you?

Well originally my gut screamed no no no...but I gave him almost nothing a few times, to see how his body reacted, then a small amount, then today he had a bit more. He seems actually fine. - which surprised me! But it's the mucus I am worried about? - can mucus not always be a sign of an intollerance?

According to my ped mucous can come from a few different things, including intolerances.

Does he still have mucous in his poops off/on since neonate and then elecare? Or has the mucous completely disappeared?

I know that when DS2 has been getting new teeth I have seen mucous in his poops...

Yes, M has also had mucus when teething, or when having a cold. It could also be a temporary reaction for his body adjusting to solid foods.

The baby rice you're using is dairy and soy-free?

Yes Elise. It is dairy and soy free.
Nadia, he has had it on and off since being on neocate. So I have never been sure if it was just his body given nothing's going through him when on neocate YK?

Did the paed/Dr suggest the rice cereal, or is that what you did with your 1st DS?

My DS1 had reflux and we saw a nutritionist/herbalist when he was very young (around 2/3 mths). Her suggestion was to keep foods as simple and natural as possible eg pureed veg. I have never done rice cereal for the boys, and won't with Isobel for this reason (as you know she is refluxing too). Stay away from the nightshade family of vege's eg tomatoes, capsicum etc, but pumpkin is a good place to start.

Just my 2c worth, coming from a place of experience with a professional.

Oh honey I agree with you! Tis has been a bit of a battle with the pead and dr and I. Both wanted me to 'try' rice cerial. Not fruit, not veg. Rice cerial. ::) I refused (politely) originally but until I said I would try they won't do anything more for T. He is maxed on meds anyway and on neocate.

But....I have to admit. I have been going uber slow...and so far he seems content on it so I'm kind of thinking maybe I was wrong ::) it's just the mucus I'm not sure about YK?

Z started on pear, he was great with pear, pumpkin, sweet potato and avocado, but never had tummy issues and we started with pear because he had the losec in it. If T is ok on this ill be moving to pumpkin and avocado next too :-*

Ok ladies, so he enjoys eating the solids ::) but I'm not sure if we have a problem or not as he still has a bit of mucus. Plus in the mucus is coloured bits. I'm not sure if its blood or something else :-\

I think ill ask my dr if I can get his stools tested.. .???

I think it's a good idea Sara to have his stools tested.

Is he having any other symptom? Gassy, looks uncomfortable, not sleeping as well? If not, I'd continue for a few days?

Well....yes....just today really, but he also possibly has a cold/bug. Zac definitely does and I noticed a runny nose. :-\

Too many variables aye.

Oh but he DOES have nappy rash - just close to his anus. This is a sign isn't it?
