Gravity/water play ideas for a 16 month old
« on: February 25, 2013, 09:07:51 am »
DD consistently finishes a meal and then plays for a while tipping water all over her tray and rubbing any leftover food into it. I tried teaching her not to but now she does it saying "no...mess" over and over. Cute, but not really the learning I was hoping for ;)

I figure that she might stop doing it if she had an opportunity to learn about gravity and water at some other play oppotunity. She has a water tray but it's for outside & it's just too cold. She has lots of opportunity at bath time to play each day.

Anyone have any fun, not too messy indoor ideas?

I just put a casserole (flattish) dish on the table with a few cm's water, a small cup, spoons, a couple of other bits and bobs, and she sits in her booster and plays. not mess free, but a towel underneath the chair keeps it fairly mess free  :)

You have probably already tried it - but something else which dd found fascinating (and similar to smearing food over the table  :P) was corn flour and water.  Put some corn flour into a tray and then give them a cup of water to pour into it, and some things to stir it with (wooden spoons etc) and let them play with the paste.  It makes a really weird texture - when you pick it up you can roll it into a hard ball but then it collapses into runny goo.

Oh yes, we did that ages ago, but I'd forgotten about it - right off to but some cornflour! :)

Thanks Mashi, she does this at my mum's house & loves it, but my sink is not really child safe. Maybe I'll try the bathroom sink...

My boss lets DS lean against the outside of the bath and squirt an old shower gel bottle filled with water into it, which he finds hilarious  ;D

It's not too messy as long as you monitor where the bottle is pointing, and can be quickly refilled from the bath tap  ;)
