So baby loves solids...
« on: March 02, 2013, 22:43:04 pm »
How do I know when to stop. I mean this kid (who I was certain would not take to them, or tolerate them) seems to want quite a bit :-\ do I just keep offering till he is full even if he's had a good quite a lot!

I'm only offering root veges (carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato) at this stage, and baby rice. Advised to steer clear of fruit due to his reflux being so severe.

I always give milk first too. But he certainly prefs solids to milk :o

This is common with refluxers as well isn't it? That they find the texture that much easier to tolerate and so enjoy it more. Plus hypoallergenic formula tastes dreadful by comparison.

I would just follow his lead for now and see where it gets you. If it does look like he is prematurely cutting milk then really all could be well as long as you have a good dietician to balance his intake.

Babies need milk - well - apart from when it makes them ill iyswim??

Yeah I think I'm going to have to regulate his intake. He had too much yesterday and got a sore tummy :-\

I'm really surprised tbh. I thought it would surely make him worse given he seems to have such a sensitive gut compared to Zac, but I think it's helping the reflux so much he's overall much more settled and for once I think he isn't hungry because he never feeds till full with his milk YK?

I did talk to my auntie who is a plunket nurse and she did think his milk intake was fine - phew.

Kelly, when are you giving solids to C?

We were giving purée at breakfast (about an hour after he bf). I was worried to give him it at night incase his tummy didn't handle it and he was awake all night but the opposite happened - when I have him purée at dinner time, he STTN 12 hours! It may have been a coincidence and last night I didn't do purée at night and he still STTN.

I'm introducing BLW because I think it will suit us better as a family and he seems to enjoy it so I'm gonna stick with that and see how we get on, that's why he never had purée last night, he had cooked carrot fingers instead :)

C is the same, even though he hasn't put much weight on over the last month or so, he is well into 6-9 mo clothes. He is 16lbs so pretty much on track weight wise!

Well, I did a dumb thing and gave him far too much in the pm and he was up all night ::) hence my post. This boy would eat and eat and hen be sick ::)

I have to do puréed because the reason we have started early is because he needs the solids in his tummy to keep the milk down iykwim? I will do a bit of blw too...hoping he's happy to chew on something when I stop giving him fooooood!

Liz. You won't believe it but he's totally uninterested in the milk as ou mentioned now he's had a taste of solids. So I put a drop of golden syrup in the bottle (also helps with constipation) and he drinks it again. Monkey! ::)

Yeah, the neocate does taste yuck doesn't it! I guess after tasting yummy veg he doesn't want the milk! Lol! Also because the milk wasnt agreeing with him completely!

I seem to have a baby that doesn't care! He nurses fine, he drinks the neocate totally fine too and he hasn't refused one thing that I've given him since we started solids! Lol! I am still giving him one bottle of neocate per day to keep him used to it because I'm pretty sure if I reintroduce it later he will refuse it!

Hmmm so I'm not surprised but T is constipated now. I just got a bg bottle in this am. (7.30) any tips to help ease constipation ???

Prune juice? Will that likely upset his tummy?

hey Sara, glad to hear your little guy is happy with his solids!  When I started DS (5.5 months BLW) it was as though I'd been starving him his entire life.

Prune juice is fine, shouldn't upset his tummy but I'd go with a prune puree, mix with something else if you need to, I don't know what he can have.  Just that juice might be too wet and liquidy for the reflux where as prune puree more likely to stay down.  not more than one prune the first time I'd say.

Did you refresh your memory on the laxative food thread?  Really useful.  Carrots for example are more constipating, I always had to limit carrot or balance it with prunes (I gave them whole but he was older and I was doing pure self feeding), it was really handy to know I could control his BMs in a very natural way to firm or loosen as needed

Thank you creations!
I'm making my way down ;)
I think ill have to try prunes...I've been advised to stay clear of fruit in general but really the carrot looks to have bunged him up so ill have to try something! ::)

You mentioned kiwi fruit was ok on the thread, Did it cause a reflux flare Hun?
I wonder if I could purée blueberries :-\

Kiwi was fine reflux wise.  I avoided citrus and after a bad reflux episode with pear I avoided that too (even though pear should be ok).
I've never found kiwi to be laxative, only in the sense of if he had too much fruit overall then he'd be too loose (but smell nice!).
Funny, I saw on there I said I was going to try prune puree in yogurt - that must have been when I found out he couldn't take yogurt (terrible reflux we still don't have yogurt). I only remember giving him whole soft prunes straight from the pack.

I would imagine you could cook blueberries in a little water until they just mushed together although not tried it.
