Teething baby wants to nurse a lot more than normal!

Is it normal for babies to want to nurse more often due to teething? Is it soothing? Poor C just can't settle sometimes without nursing. I'm pretty sure he has a tooth which is ready to pop through, I can see a little white dot under the gum. Usually he sucks his thumb to sooth but recently at naps, he has been crying then he finds his thumb, he sucks it for a few seconds and then screams again I tried shh/pat and pu/pd but Im pretty sure it's pain so I'm not doing them anymore - when I hold him he wants to nurse - he nuzzles in and tried to find my boob I'm not sure what to do? I've just been feeding him but the problem I have is that he is usually very sick if he eats too much so I don't want this to happen too often?

It is pretty normal, yes.  It's that clever breast milk that isn't just nutrition, but comfort and analgesia too.
Have you tried any pain meds, either topical or paracetamol?

Would he suck on a frozen wash cloth instead?

I tried the frozen muslin thing the other day and he wasnt keen

I have been giving meds when he seems really sore with it and it does seem to help so I'm sure it is teething but I am worried about getting into bad habits twice I've nursed to sleep for naps

DP is home this morning so I will get him to do C's nap and he how he goes....

Hugs. z was a bit like this. I always APOPed and he came right after the pain passed. If DP can do some and he wil lax pet this it's a good way to break up the feed to sleep at every nap etc concern.

I really hope he settles for DP because nursing to sleep has been the only way to settle sometimes! I have so much to do this morn!!

He's been fed at 8am and needs his nap at 9am so there's no way he will be hungry! I know it's a comfort for him, I don't actually mind feeding him but I'm worried about it becoming a prop I'm torn...

Nothing is better here Naps are hell and when I try and lift him for pu/pd he pulls at my top and tries to nuzzle into me. I managed to get him asleep (holding him but not nursing!). I have put a ban on nursing at nap time - Ive only done it twice over the last week but I dont want him to get used to it! He had nursed 2 hours before and had some toast so I dont think he was hungry, it is just a comfort to him!

Teething gel doesnt seem to do anything here neither do teething powders! Ibuprofen seems to be the only thing that helps him! Ive been able to see the white nub for over a week now, I really thought it was about to pop through!

How is the reflux with teething? - teething amuses reflux flares often. Also PU/pd may agrivate reflux
Will he respond to ski/pat or rocking if sore? I hope it pops soon.

Apparently anbesol liquid Is very good for teething relief.

Personally I don't think using pain relief meds within the daily limits is a problem. I would give it if it works!

the reflux doesn't seem to be a problem. Today he cried so much it reminded me of those early days before the reflux was controlled but his symptoms arent there iykwim? He nursed more than normal today but then threw up more than normal so its been a bit rubbish

Symptoms can change as they grow. Any dry cough? Smelly spills?

Agree re. anbesol liquid. You don't need a lot of it, but it's easier to apply than gel

slight cough but very minimal, still spilly A LOT and sometimes smelly (depending on if its right after hes fed or a little while later).

We stopped the ranitidine because the paed said that his reflux symptoms were controlled by eliminating dairy and soy I wonder whether he still needs it? Wouldnt we have noticed sooner than now though?

I caved and nursed him at nap time I put him down 1 hour before he was due a feed and he wouldnt settle so half an hour later (still half an hour before he was due to feed) I caved and nursed then put him down asleep!

Why cant I just get it all right? Grrr
