6 week old short napa
« on: March 04, 2013, 19:52:50 pm »
My daughter is nearly 6 weeks and we generally go by EASY but am very flexible right now as she's so young and because of my two year old.

What I mainly wanted to check was what I should do about short naps. She either has one hour naps or often only half hour, wherever she is napping. Should I try to extend them this early or just go with it for now? Today I pretty much had to feed her after every nap as she was quite grizzly.

Thanks,

Kristy

They are due for a growth spurt at 6 weeks so she may well be needing the extra feeds. Let it go for a few days to see if she settles a bit more. How does that sound?

Ok thanks for reply. Today has been a bit rubbish too, taken ages to get her down and then only for half hour. But put her straight in sling after and first nap she went off again. Doesn't seem to be desperate for food though today, unless that's just the comfort of the sling. Oh well, I have my toddler today too so not tried very hard.

Will come back for more advise soon I'm sure. X

Ok, pretty sure she's not growth spurting right now.

Today she had half hour in cot, cried to get to sleep, and white noise. Managed to extend to another half hour using white noise again.

Second nap half hour again, and again extended half hour in cot, then half ish hour in car.

Third nap only 20 mins I think, although either woke is of wind or because the white noise stopped! Couldn't extend in cot, put in sling and went off again there. Is it bad to use the sling too much? I have to when I have both children but that's not the case today.

Don't actually know what I'm asking, lol.

Should I change how she goes to sleep? I put her in her cot and generally she cries but not too badly for about 10 mins. And use white noise. Not really sure how else to do it?

Is half hour under or over tired?

Thanks

Kristy

Hi hon- At 6 weeks and especially with the 2 i'd just go with the sling at this point if you are finding it works to extend. The short naps sound like they could be OT related so getting more sleep into her is a good idea even with the sling. Carrying your LO has so many benefits for you and the LO, doing it even without the toddler is always ok! THeres plenty of time to be working on extending in an independent way on a month or 2. Starting the naps in the cot is a good idea anyway for not getting into too much APing.

How long is her A time? THings can still be a bit messy at 6 weeks, but she may need her A time adjusted as it could e too long. Also- short naps constant snacking could be a sign of reflux too- any other signs like crying, pain that point to this? The fact that she resettles in the sling also points to this...

Hi,

Thank you for your reply, it has made me feel much better! I don't feel bad now about using the sling.

Her A time has been approx 1 hour - 1.5 hour depending a bit in how long it takes to fall asleep.

I try to take her on her first yawn. Well, on dats I only have her that is! And sometimes it's been after just half hour so I wait a little bit as I'm not confident enough she's really tired and would feel bad taking her too early? Do they yawn when bored at this age?

Also, don't think she has reflux. No snacking anymore. No sick. Fairly happy most time nowadays.

Thanks,

K x

At 6 weeks most bubs can manage the full 1 hour of A time, some can manage a little more- something like 1 hour 10 or 15. I would think that after 30 mins only of A time that she'd not be tired enough to sleep well for you and may just need a change of scenery.
