Mantra cry...but she needs ME to fall asleep
« on: March 11, 2013, 15:36:15 pm »
Hello ladies!
I just started last week EASY with my 11 weeks old DD2.
She's adapting very well to the routine and falling asleep in her crib relatively fast. First day/nap she cries for almost 1h, but the following ones she didn't cry much and fall asleep quickly (5-15min of mantra cry and no intervention of mine)

BUT.... lately (couple of days ago) for her naps she does the mantra cry for 20min and when she gets too agitated I come into the room touch her shoulder do a little shh/pad and withing 2 seconds she's takes a deep breath and falls asleep.

So for the following naps I let her mantra cry for 5-10min max and then I come into the room, put my hand on her shoulder, do a little shh/pad and she does a noise like "hmmm where were you?" and falls asleep intermediately.

So now I wonder if that's ok?? I know Tracy says we CAN'T intervene when she's mantra crying but this seems to work so fast! as soon as I put my hand on her shoulder. She still needs me to fall asleep, should I stop that or since she's still too young I can keep doing it?

Let me know what you think.

Thanks!!
Marie

At her age i'd stay in the room with her if you are not sure- she's still a fraction on the young side for independent settling. As long as you are settling her in the crib you are on the right track.

Sorry to budge in, but how do you tell mantra crying from other cries? I feel like I am not even giving my LO a chance to self-soothe :(

It takes a lot of observation and practice. The first couple of days of independent sleep you will be definitely be able to tell the difference.
From my experience with my DD2, mantra cry looks more like a complaint/not rhythmic cry (often stops and goes again) and the real cry is non stop in crescendo cry...

I think there's a thread about how to tell the difference with mantra cry vs. real cry, check out the board to find it.

Thanks!!
Today has been very very wonky. She`s usually a happy girl and today she has been complaining a lot. She cried  A LOT at all naps and my magic hand was no use  :'(
((sight))...I guess there are good days and bad days....is how it is with LOs  ::)

Good luck to you too!
