odd behaviour at nap time
« on: March 13, 2013, 14:07:00 pm »
Audrey is 11mo, and has been acting "off" for a few days at nap time (and sometimes bedtime actually, now that I think of it). I suppose it's odd behaviour only because it's Audrey - the most chill, laid-back, happy baby I've ever encountered (don't know how it happened, but I'll take it!); this might be normal for other babies, but it's out of the norm for her (my older one didn't really do this either).

When she goes down for naps (and sometimes bed, as I said), she starts crying really hard, sobbing, and is sitting up and will not lay down; it's almost as if she's forgotten how to get back down, although she knows very well how to get down from sitting.

Now, I have a huge suspicion that it's her 4 top teeth causing her some distress since I can see them all just waiting to pop through; but why only at sleeptimes? (maybe the congestion she has from teething? Mattress is elevated, humidifier on) She's fine during her A time, a little fussy sometimes, but nothing unusual; just extra sensitive to things around her face ie. she flails something she's holding and it grazes her face, she starts to cry, whereas a week ago, it wouldn't have bothered her.

I know some babies get major separation anxiety, and she's pretty attached to me, but doesn't freak out if I leave the room during A time (but is very happy to see me return when I do!), she is not a snuggler so even if I were to pick her up - which I've tried! - it doesn't calm her as I would expect it might.

Am I overthinking this? Likely just her teeth? Or maybe a phase she's going through? Maybe time to adjust nap schedule?
(which, by the way, she takes 2 naps: WU 630am (sometimes earlier, but that's when I get her out of bed), nap #1 930-1030am, nap #2 130-330pm, bedtime 7pm)

Also now that I am thinking about it, she's been a bit gassier than normal .... maybe some gas build up making her uncomfortable at sleeptime?

I'm hoping it's her teeth, and that they'll come through soon. I can't imagine getting 4 in at once, so I feel bad for her.

Anywho, thanks!
E

Sounds like teeth. Does medicating before a nap help? Hugs x

I gave her some Tylenol at bedtime the second night that she was having hard time, and it did help. But haven't medicated since, as she hasn't seemed in that much pain since. And of course - isn't it always the way with babies? haha - her naps the last two days were much better, still some tears, but not as much or as hard, and I only went in once with the intention of going back in after x amount of time, and before that time came, she was asleep. Babies! But I agree - I think it's the teeth, I actually saw a little corner of one poking out of the gum yesterday, so....
And bedtime last night was fine as well (well, minus the vomit due to cough-brought-on-by-congestion while daddy was putting her jammies on ... poor peanut)
Thanks!

Going better thanks! Pretty well back to normal ... though I'm sure that will all be out the window in 2 weeks when she starts daycare when I go back to work full time :P Oh well, c'est la vie! But the teeth seems to be making their appearance, so hopefully the worst is over!

Thanks!
she's just taken 30min to fall asleep for her morning nap ... just sitting up there, babbling .... I have a feeling that the 2-1 is going to have to happen, especially in daycare .... I will have no control over how that will go!  :-\ Good thing she's easy going, she'll probably do fine with it .... can't stress out about it, got enough to think about with going back to work and being sad about leaving my babes!

Hugs, try pushing the nap out 15 mins and hopefully it helps he settle quicker. Tey also do go through stages where they take longer to settle YK? Often when they're working on a new skill etc ;)
