Baby hates milk....loves solids.
« on: March 24, 2013, 04:23:42 am »
Mmmm well. I can't decide if I need to be concerned or not. Dr says no, I say yes but can't do much about it can I?

T hates his milk now he has solids. I don't blame him, it's gross. I try everything but she barely drinks it. Here is today
WU 6.45 and meds
E 7.45 60-90 mls max solids (pear) 45 mins later
E 12 30-60 mls. Solids 45 mins later (pumpkin, jumpers, prune and chicken broth)
E 3.30 (surely he must want some!!??) almost force fed to get 90 mls over 30 mins.
No solids offered. So I can get some milk drunk at BT
E will be at BT ~ 6

I know it's wonky. But if I hold him longer or less I get the same ::)

ATM he is taking his feeds at night ::) this started when he had a reflux flare from me accidentally giving him milk doses for a week :o so he refused milk all together ::)

NF have been ~11 150 mls and ~4 120 mls.

Should I start to cut 1 bottle back volume wise or something else?
Should I be worried about his total intake?

Solids really help his reflux - a lot. And, hes a hungry baby - 90th for height and only 50th for weight. So I'm reluctant to cut back.

I wouldn't worry about his total intake, it looks about ok for a 6 month old, and he isn't far off from 6 months.  I know the worry though. DS took half the guidance milk and I was always worried but he was fine (I started solids 5.5 months he was desperate for solids, it was like I was starving him on milk).
Personally I'd keep the night feeds as they stand, I know it looks out of balance with them being big milk feeds and so little in the day but if he finds it easier to take the milk in the night i'd just keep going with it for another few months.
Do you give vitamin drops?  In the UK they are recommended for all babies but most people don't use them. I use them with DS because of his lower than average formula intake and the formula has all the vits.

Never heard of vit drops. He is on probiotics, his milk is neocate so the is little waste.
T would eat all dy if I let him, he tries to get our food too :o Z never did this.

Thanks for your thoughts Hun, it's nice to know hrs not the only one and he will be ok! X

Hi hun
I dont know if this helps at all. Sorry if you already know. My lo is also on neocate and his paed and dietician have both said that his milk is more calorific than normal formula. Also the dietician said that as long as he's getting 20oz a day then nutritionally he is getting what he needs.
It is worrying though. When we first changed to neocate he went from drinking 33oz a day to 22. He soon got used to the tast but still only drinks 28 max a day.

DS did eat all day when we started solids. Each solids meal took 45 mins to an hour because he just kept on eating.  I honestly felt like I did nothing but give him milk solids sleep, repeat, the entire day.  It's fun but wow it was tiring in those early days, cooking, washing, cooking, washing!

Easy to check this one: standard milk-based formula is about 20cals/oz :)

It's absorbed into the body so less waste rather than calories i think. Thanks pinkladyangel
A full feed on elecare (equiv) for Ts age is 5 x 5 oz/150 ml bottles
Today he was better and had...
7.30 90 mls
11.30 90 mls
3.00 120 mls
6 120 mls
3 smaller meals rather than 2 larger. (8.15, 12.15 and 3.35 respectively)

Lets see how tonight goes!

Sara - I wonder if he is just more fluxy in the AM hours??  From sleeping at night, the acid bumps up and the settles over the course of the day?

Could be, though historically it flares come evening. Zac flared during 4am-4pm but T never seems bad till after lunch. :-\

That said, I have stopped splitting his meds because the pm dose kept being forgotten. He gets 20mg on WU so it could be that ... Mmmmm ill mull on it

DS always took more milk for the BT and DF.  So when he 'should' have had 120ml bottles he took 60ml at each feed apart from BT and DF when he'd take almost the full 120ml.  When he 'should' have had 180ml bottles he took 90ml at each feed apart from BT and DF when he'd take almost 180ml.  He was on regular baby formula (pre-made cartons) so the amount and absorption would be different.  He was like this when meds were 3 times per day and when they were changed to twice per day.
I never felt 100% reassured by weight gain, yk on the one hand they (HVs GPs etc) say to focus on weight gain, but then you see the panic when you tell them how little milk he's having.  But it's true he was fine.
It's worth remembering that LOs used to start solids much earlier than today's guidance too, if T is happier on solids, taking a good amount and willing to try a variety of foods he is likely to get many of his needs met by the solids diet even though the rule is that milk is more important.  For LOs who don't take to solids so well milk is obviously a lot more important than trying to force/encourage solids too early.

That is exactly the same as standard formula... so not more calorific at all... just less waste perhaps as Sara mentioned.

No worries Hun,your right in that LOs need less to get what they need, it's due to it being absorbed high in the gut :-*

So yesterday was best in ages he had 1 NF 90-120 mls at 11 then nothing till morning (I'm about to feed him at 6am)
Maybe he needs the 3 smaller meals

Not at all.. it's not more calorific, but more of it becomes waste so essentially bubs needs less volume to meet his/her needs :)
