Low level white noise all night?
« on: April 08, 2013, 21:22:59 pm »
Hi everyone

My DD is 2.5yo and is a HSC. She has super sensitive hearing, it's ridiculous. She complains very strongly that her nose is too noisy when she has a cold bless her.

We used to live in a flat which could be noisy at the weekends and even footsteps over head would wake DD up so we put a fan on low in her room to block out extra noise and this really helped her get a more rested nights sleep.

Now we've moved to a much quieter area but the house is really creaky and when you turn the taps on they make quite a swooshing noise all which disturb DD. Her room is small and the house is much colder than the flat (it was super insulated so never got cold, even in winter) so a fan won't work.

I was thinking of using very low level white noise to stop her being disturbed at night but could we leave it on all night? The reason being that DP sometimes needs to be up at 5/5.30am for work and him getting up wakes her up and she's doesn't go back to sleep!! And she very easily slips into an OT cycle which lasts for WEEKS!!

Any advice would be really appreciated

*Kate*

When my DD was younger she used to have white noise on all night and it wasn't a problem. I had an app on my iPod on a docking station in her room which worked great.

My kids still have white noise on all night, and I would too except that I need to be able to hear them.

Yes, I wish I could sleep with it too!

Bex has a good idea if the fan doesn't pan out. We've always used small 'desktop' fans (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001R1Q2C6/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1365480045&sr=8-2&pi=SL75) and they don't seem to cool the room much at all. We live in a cold state, and while the house is well-insulated it can get drafty in places. We do dress them warmer and give more blankets/sleep-sacks in the winter. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you might try it a few nights before disregarding it, as you might not need to get something new if it doesn't make too much of a difference in temperature. :-\

We have just stopped using white noise in DD's room for all naps and overnight.  We just used a radio tuned between stations to create static.

Same. Z still has it, and it's relatively loud. It's always on really. Just an iPod docked on repeat white noise.

Ok great. Thank you everyone. Ill do that then! Good idea about the mini fan. I don't really want to use my iPhone as I need it in the evenings. Anyone know of white noise machines? They seem expensive from the quick search that I've done

Have you not got an iPod or similar hun? Couldn't be without my iPhone either but didn't use my iPod at night so that was fine for the white noise. Hope the mini fan works though, they will be cheaper.

We use white noise for all naps and sleep. I just burnt a free track online onto a cd and put that on repeat on a stereo in DDs room. That way you can turn it up as loud or as low as you need it.

I'm just getting one, after using fans for years...my sister has a graco one that she has used with her almost 4 year old from birth for all naps and night and it is still going strong. It is on Amazon for around $45.

Yes! We use an iPod. It's on all night. Not too high just enough so he wont hear anything.

As you become more clear about who you really are, you'll be better able to decide what is best for you - the first time around
