eating every 2 hrs?
« on: April 12, 2013, 15:51:17 pm »
Okay so bare with me ladies as I truly don't know if this is a routine thing, a hunger thing or a growth spurt thing.

Basically dd is 1 month today  :o and has been taking 3 ounces (breast milk and formula) every 3 hrs.  During the day I have had to wake her for every feed and then have struggled to keep her awake for at least an hour afterwards.  Her last feed is usually at 6:30 and then she decides to wake up so it can take sometimes till the next feed to get her to sleep or she will sleep till 10/10:30.  We feed her again as its been 4 hours since last feed and then she wakes usually around 1/1:30 and then wakes anywhere between 3 and 5 and is fussy till 6am.  So last night  I fed at 1:30 (3 ounces of formula) and she woke at 3.  In my sleep deprived brain I thought no way could she be hungry its only been 2 hours so I changed diaper and changed her sleep position (she is a side sleeper) and she went back to sleep till 6:30!  Dh fed her at 7 and she was up till 8 and dozed till about 9 when she woke screaming, so I changed her and tried to console her, then tried feeding thinking maybe hunger.  She downed a 3 ounce bottle, was awake for about an hour then went down for a nap woke screaming at 11.  Tried everything again then fed and she downed another 3 ounce bottle.  Her next feed time is scheduled for 2 and she is asleep in the swing at the moment. Could this be a growth spurt or a case of her confusing night and day and us just fixing it so maybe she'll sleep better tonight?  So confused and tired lol.

Please move if I am in the wrong spot and thanks if you followed my jumbled story.

Easy today looks like this so far well at least our eats and our sleeps.  Activity time is obviously in between lol:

Don't mind the spurt but would love it if it means I get more sleep lol

Does she drain bottles hun??  At a month of age 4-5 ozs would be average per feed.

I would go ahead and offer her 5 ozs and see what she takes...

She's only taking 3 oz per feed and she has drained the bottle since we started. Anymore then 3 ounces and she spits it back up.

If she's been on 3oz for a few weeks though I would increase them to 4oz now and see how she does, her tummy may be able to cope a bit better now.

Thanks ladies! We thought she could be a refluxer and she does reflux sometimes but it does not seem to bother her in the least and by 5 weeks with dd1 we were already medication for reflux.  We upped the bottle to 4 ounces and now she is at every 3 hours during the day and anywhere between 2-3 night feeds.  I did check with my ped and his basic thoughts on it was to be careful with adding ounces b/c if she is a refluxer it will irritate her but if she is handling it fine then to feed her what she wants as he has no problems with chubby babies :)  She was almost 10 lbs at her 1 month check up so I guess she needs it lol.

BM T was a bit funny like this. A small feeder and give too much he would chuck it up or refuse next feed. Same with stretching timings. But then all ofa sudden (after a GS usually) he could tolerate the extra oz and go a bit longer. It was always once I had given up then had 1 last try he would do it ::)

Hugs, your doing great!
