Flying with a 12.5 month old.. Need to buy tickets ASAP
« on: April 18, 2013, 00:12:51 am »
Hi all Please move this if it's not in the right place. Couldn't figure out where to put it. So My LO will be flying on a 3hr plane ride with DH (first time) and I wont be there to help. :/  Trying to find the best time for them to fly. LO is VERY Active and I thought originally, having the flight from 11:30-2:30 would mean he'd probably take a good nap on the flight? He at that age will be probably going to sleep around 12. (already in the 2-1 dreaded phase). But then I heard that with all the activity he probably wouldn't sleep at all and just be VERY OT? I could possibly put a blanket over the car seat (we plan on getting him his own seat?) so he has a place to chill out.  Or would it be better to have him sit in DH's lap?

We could choose an earlier flight a 9am But that means waking him up early at like 5:30am feeding him and getting him to the airport by 7 then they would land right after his nap should have started around 12:15?? So he'd be OT and not anywhere near a place to nap and by the time they get bags, in the car etc looking like 1pm?

I've flown a number of times with my LOs at various ages (from 6 months up to 4 yrs).  If you can get a separate seat then I would get one as it will provide you with more space and yes, if you can get the car seat on board, then even better and safer.  If you can't get the extra seat, usually the flight attendants are good about holding your LO if you need to use the lav or get something from the overhead compartment.

WRT time of flight, I prefer the mid-day flights even if it is during their nap time.  As you mention, you won't have to get up super early and usually airports tend to be busier in the mornings and late afternoons (ie. business travel) so you would avoid the crowds, etc.  It's hard to predict if you will get a nap or if you do, if it will be a decent one so you just have to be flexible.  Perhaps your LO will sleep on the way to the airport or have a nap at your destination.

Is your LO walking?  If yes, your DH may spend much of the time walking (assuming no turbulence).  Some things to think about when traveling solo is how to pack all of the stuff that's needed when you are on board.  I've never taken the car seat on board because I couldn't figure out the logistics of having to carry the seat and push the stroller and then have to carry my LO on board and carry all of the stuff, including the car seat.  If you have an infant carrier that you can use, it does free up your hands to carry stuff once you have to leave your stroller on the jetway.  Good luck to your DH.

From my experience of taking a 9/10 month old from UK to Australia and back (:o) I would say absolutely the best thing that you can do, besides all the great practical advice from PaulsMom, is to actively 'decide' to have a bad nap day.  Make your peace with the fact it will be an odd day, he will most likely get OT, but it's one day and he will get right back on track without too much trouble :)  Somehow when things are out of your hands that's actually easier to do.  I agree I'd probably take the lunchtime flight though - if you go for the early one he'll get a short night and possibly no nap, at least with the lunchtime one he'll have had a decent night and you can be confident knowing you've done what you can to minimise tiredness.

Thanks to you both. That's what I was thinkinf. I just feel bad for DH but then again he's the one who wanted to make the trip, I can't do to a prior xommitmant. So he's alone for the first flight and all week. Oy.

Ok so  here is another question. For take off and landing, change in pressure issues how do I handle that. He does not take a dummie, or suck his thumb. I can offer a bottle but he may not take it. He has his own seat for the flight.

We got sucky lolly/sweet type things for our kids. I don't like giving them but it kept them busy and kept them swallowing.

You think that will be ok for a 12 month old? I'm concerned he might bite a piece and choke?

We didn't do anything particular to be honest and she wasn't bothered :). Other option is offering a BF (if you still are?) - we did that a couple of times x

Oh yes, sorry!  I honestly wouldn't worry too much - J really didn't seem to notice. Perhaps DH could offer a snack to encourage chewing and swallowing?

Agree with Jess, my Los don't really notice take off and landing.  If they notice something it's usually the initial part of the decent say from 30,000 feet down to 15,000 feet (so usually 30 to 45 min before landing).  This is when I usually try to feed them so they can swallow something and adjust the pressure in their ears.
