scooters..
« on: April 18, 2013, 09:47:41 am »
We've got a scooter for DS for his third birthday.  (Yikes, he's three! How did that happen?!)  I just wanted to ask if you get your LO to wear a helmet for scooting.

He is quite a cautious fellow and is relatively unlikely to try 100 mph down the nearest hill.  At least not yet.  We cycle commute a lot and don't use helmets.  I feel a bit like wearing a helmet is sending a message that 'this is dangerous' and, given his natural caution, he'll just be even more so = never really get going on it. I like the feeling of the wind in my hair myself and I know he does too.

What do y'all think?

We don't do helmets for scooters - mine are fairly naturally cautious too and I feel that the risk is small - but we do wear helmets for cycling. We were pretty grateful for the helmet when dd2 came off her bike over the handlebars - 14 stitches in her lip and the helmet cracked: I dread to think what that would have meant for her head if she hadn't had the helmet. It wasn't even her fault - we came across a hill that was steeper then expected and she couldn't brake hard enough, so even though she is generally cautious she still had a nasty accident.

If we're just scooting into school from the car (about 300m) they don't wear helmets but if we scoot all the way to school or anywhere else then dd1 wears one, and I really need to get dd2 one as she is scarily fast on her scooter. When they come off them at speed it can be quite nasty. And always helmets for cycling, always.

I scooter and so does dh and of course ds!   We all wear helmets.  If you have rode one one you'll understand why.  Scooters sometimes hit small stones, gravelly sections or dirt and the first thing it does is dig it's front wheel and tip you forward flying.! So glad my head and brains are protected. Just like on my bike.  The only time ds didn't wear a helmet was on his low, low to the ground trike. If friends come over and want to use the scooter, I tell them they have to wear the helmet because I am not cleaning up any brains off the road!

L has a helmet too which she wears when she scoots (although she's not really that fast yet!)

She hates putting it on though, doing the clip up under her chin.  How do you manage that bit with your LOs without tickling/poking them?

Oh and how can I forget, if riding on or near road with cars, of course a helmet.  When he was only 2 and 3 on his trike, he only rode on our back patio.

helmets for bikes and scooters, and knee pads/elbow pads for scooter (more because the the pads came with it and DD is enamoured of them, but they have saved a few scraped knees.) Helmets for kids on bikes are mandatory in much of Canada. I know the wind feels nice through my hair (and the helmet does awful things to it), but as my friend always says,"Helmets are sexy because brains are sexy!"
Also, Montreal drivers are insane.

Montreal drivers are insane.
London drivers not exactly all in the well adjusted camp either!  I was in position for a right-hand turn one day and a driver pull round the blind corner, stopped his car in the middle of the road (just round the corner so the oncoming traffic couldn't see him), and got out in order to come over and yell at me about 'sitting in the middle of the road'.  I was a little surprised.  I politely recommended he review his copy of the highway code (or words to that effect).

At the moment LO's only the bike when in a bike-seat.  I suppose that's different to cycling on his own.

Right so, if I should get him a helmet, do you have recommendations? Or ones to avoid?
