teething related non eating
« on: May 09, 2013, 19:01:11 pm »
I think  :-\ ???
M really does eat hardly anything of her lunch and dinner these days. Breakfast is fine but the other two are awful. Tonight she ate nothing of tea apart from a tiny bit of fruit puree and an oatcake. Lunch a yoghurt, nothing that I put on her plate beforehand. I do try to put lots of little bits to try and tempt her so for lunch she had bread and almond butter, turkey and cheese cubes, raisins, couple of apricots and some celery. Nothing. Tea was tomato veg pasta and mackeral. Nothing.
She is teething but this is hard as she just pushes her legs into the table so she then pushes back, sits about a metre away from the table and is generally loud disrupting any story or talk I might be having with H.  ::)
So yes, not great. We do get her down if she is clearly finished but she has not even started!

what does she eat/drink between meals?

could you tempt her with something 'fun' eg a home-made yoghurt+fruit ice lolly for pudding? might be nice if she is teething.

is this a recent thing?  how did she used to eat?

Becky, DS goes right off his food when he is teething or poorly too. he will eat breakfast, usually, but it's hit and miss with the rest of the day and can look like he's living off air.  He can even throw a tantrum at the mention that dinner is on the table.  One those times I don't force him to sit with us, but I do tell him clearly it is dinner time and we would enjoy his company, I know he never acts like that we he is not teething so there is no point pushing it as a behavioural issue yk? Same with when he eats nothing (or 2 bites) and pushes away from the table.  i just let him go with the idea that when I am ill the last thing I want is to sit at a table and socialise with people and look at food I don't want.  He always makes up for it after the pain has gone.  just recently he has asked for meds during dinner time and both times I could only offer ibuprofen so i told him I needed him to eat a bit before he got the meds because they are better not to be on an empty tummy.  I'll also make something I know he loves like fish finger and chips which he finds very hard to resist.

cath - she was always a great eater until probably a few months ago. Now we really struggle to get anything into her for lunch or dinner, breakfast is no problem.
She does have snacks inbetween meals but not loads. I would think she should still be hungry for meals, it does not even seem to matter what we give her. All she wants when she is at the table is yoghurt or pureed fruit??

The thing is I don't know how much pain she is in tbh. We are getting more fesity behaviour but I think that is mainly due to being 2...her nights are ok, we do get EWings but that is the norm. Some naps are short, some ok, hard to tell.

I just am not sure how to approach it. At tea time the expectation is we all sit at the table and I do want to keep that really but she is being very disruptive with the shouting and kicking the table etc so maybe I should just let her down and not worry about what she has or has not eaten.

Becky, I can understand wanting her to be at the table for dinner. Family meal times together are very important to me, I really believe in all sitting together, enjoying one another, catching up, reconnecting, and eating the same meal (as far as possible, I do slight adaptations for DS to suit his personal preferences).  I can also see that with two LOs you wouldn't want it to look like one is expected to eat a certain amount and stay at the table whilst the other doesn't need to.  I just see it as illness/teething/tiredness and perhaps if you say this when you let her down from the table it will explain the differences in expectations?
I know once DP was snappy with DS for not coming to the table for dinner, a day when DS was clearly poorly, I asked DP if he expected me to sit and eat a family meal and socialise when I am poorly, he said no. Enough said.

if you are worried about the balance of her diet can you maybe give something different at breakfast when she is more willing to eat?  Apart from social conventions there is really nothing to say that meat, veg, pasta etc can't be eaten for breakfast or for the snacks so that across the day she gets a balance?

We get exactly the same thing right now. The push away from the table with his legs...GRR...  >:(
DS, for the last week maybe, hasn't eaten hardly anything at dinner. A few bits of cheese, some orange sections, a few pasta noodles here and there...
I try not to worry too much about his diet as we supplement with a multivitamin but it sure would be nice to have a quiet family meal with the carry on...

hugs

Be my, just although...we have recently had some terrible food related issues with Z. I put it down to teething. His last tooth is pret, uch through buthe is worse than ever, like he has a sore throat. Wanting a bottle at random times ???

I just realised I think his reflux has come back with his molar cutting. (Was hoping that was over) Did M have reflux? Could this be a possibility?

well she cried non stop for the first 6 weeks but I 'think' that was hunger poor love as I was BFing and I just don't have enough milk. Henry only lasted 3 days before even the midwives were trying to ram formula down him but M is more chilled bless her. She was fine once we added some formula though so don't think it was reflux in the end.
Tonight was better - no snack at all in the pm and she loves salmon. x

My son had days he pretty much went off food.  When it was really bad we used some baby nurofen and bonjela but tbh, he seemed to catch up later.  If it's not affecting sleep and you've cut down on snacks elsewhere I'd just ride it out.
Here's my blog which is focussed on simple food for babies, toddlers and families http://mamacook.blogspot.com/
