Do you take your LO out on windy days?
« on: May 13, 2013, 20:45:26 pm »
The snow has finally melted here and we're starting to get some nice warm days so I'm itching to get outside more often before DD turns into a vampire!  The problem is that it seems to be windy every day >:(  And I'm not talking about a light breeze - it's howling wind gusts from 20 to 50 km an hour.  I've taken DD out for short walks but I'm worried about her getting an ear infection from all of the wind.  Is this an overprotective mama thing or can it happen?  Do you take your LO out on windy days?

Yeah, I do. They wear the appropriate clothes, thick enough/warm enough hats, and if it's very windy, we use the hood on their jackets as well.
We can't stay inside every windy day. Not happening.
Our climate is pretty similar to Canada, allthough it seems like it might be colder where you live because our snow was gone by april. We're outside all year around, with the snow and cold too.

We go out in the wind. Just wear winter hats. The only time we don't go out is in snow/rain storms.

Do you have them wear winter hats even in the summer?  Today was 27 so I was worried she might overheat.  I think I worry too much....:)

Yes, it's stupidly windy where I live (North Dakota), so if we didn't go out on windy days we'd miss a lot.  I haven't heard of ear infections with too much wind, but I always hate it when LOs as young as yours have trouble catching their breath in the wind. :(  We put hoods up and try to stay in a relatively protected area.  When it's really bad... 25-30mph and above, I'll sometimes just open the garage and let them play with their outdoor toys in there.  But, that doesn't work as well with an 8mo old. :-\  My kids are now at the age where it doesn't bother them, they just want to be outside, but we still don't stay as long as a quieter day.

HAHA... no obviously no winter hat in 27 degrees... I would just do a hood from a sweater or jacket. Like Katie we play in the garage a lot too when its windy.

My kids had some little light weight knit hats when they were smaller that would do on a windy but warm day.  Kind of like the newborn cotton beanie ones. Really strong winds might keep us inside (or at least in the yard where the fence blocks some of it) but otherwise it doesn't matter.

That's a great idea.  I'll have to get one.

Is the wind about to knock your house over where you are?  It's been howling like crazy all morning - it just about sent our BBQ flying off the deck!

Yeah, we also have some thin, knitted, cotton hats, we use those all summer here.

The more she is outside, the better for her health  ;D

I would get a good jacket with a hood that can be closed tightly and of course a hat underneath it.

Scotty only ever gets sick when we spend too much time indoors  :-\

Lily what about earwarmer headbands? Like a crocheted headband which covers her ears?

Oooh, I love the headband idea.  Those are so cute.  Thanks, Sara.  I don't crochet but MIL does so maybe she'll make one for DD.

I agree about going out being healthier, Steffi.  I'm also hating being inside.  I'm still having a hard time getting out though - the wind has been 50km/h almost every day this month.  I don't know how it can say so windy for so long.  It's almost impossible to push the stroller in wind like that and our yard isn't landscaped yet (it's just dirt and rock) so we don't even have a place in our yard that she can play in :(

It's so windy right now, I just had to run out move my deck furniture because it was starting to blow off the deck >:(  Looks like another day stuck inside. Even the cutest hat won't stand up to 70km/h winds!
