21 month old -NW and early waking
« on: May 30, 2013, 00:03:44 am »
DD is 21 months.  She's generally a happy toddler, but sleep wise we always seem to have issues.  From 18-19 months we were dealing with early morning waking (5am) plus some night wakings.  Then from 19-20 months everything seemed to fall in place.  Sleeping a solid 11-12 hours at night with one two hour nap midday.  Now for the last month we are back to early wakings (4-5:30am), with some night wakings (mostly after midnight).  She goes to a sitter Monday-Friday so it's hard to know exactly how the sitter is dealing with naps.  But first we tried pushing her nap a half hour earlier due to her waking so early (11:30-1:30).  But the early wakings continued, so we tried capping the naps to 1.5 hours.  This helped make her go down easily at bedtime, but early wakings and night wakings (not every night) have continued.  Last night she wOke twice after midnight and was still up at 5:30 for the day.  She napped 1.5 hours (up at 1:20 sitter said). went to bed at 7pm, and has already had a night waking at (8:30pm).  So I'm at a loss!  I can't seem to figure out if she's OT or UT??  Our general day looks like:

Wake (4-5-30am)
Nap (11:30/12-1:30)
Bedtime 7pm.
On the weekends she naps usually just 1.5 hours (wakes on her own).  Occasionally she'll do 2 hours, but not often.  Even with little sleep she's generally pleasant and in a good mood.  Please help!

Hello

That is quite a drop in daily sleep she's had recently so my guess would be that she's now OT.
I suggest you try EBT for a few days to try to help her to catch up. Hopefully as she is less OT the EWs will go and you'll be able to push the nap later again. Keeping it early can reinforce the EWs.
Once she has caught up then you could try and see whether a later or capped nap, for example, will work best for her.

Also, do you think there is any teething going on?

One another thought - do you use a Gro clock or similar? This can really help LOs stay asleep longer or resettle after an EW. If you don't already use something like this I'd recommend considering it.

Thanks!  So today DD woke at 5 am, but was noticeably crankier this morning and yawning.  Then we noticed her nose running, so I suspect she's coming down with a cold.  :(. Anyhow, I got the sitter to put her down for a nap around 11am.  She said she fell asleep shortly after 11am and woke on her own shortly before 1:30pm (so approx. 2 hours).  So what time do you think would be a good bedtime?  6 or 6:30pm?  What's a typical A time in the afternoon for a 21 month old?  What time is ideal for a nap with a 6-6:30am wake up ?  If we ever get to that lol.  Do you think I should keep going with an early nap and early bedtime?  Thanks!

15 mins to settle really isn't too bad (pretty average) at this age.  I think (hope!) you went for the right BT.
How was today?

What do you think about trying the Gro clock/lights on a timer idea? For us they really helped with EWs

I don't think 21 months is too young. We first got one with my son when he was 22 months and it worked great. You do have to be 100% consistent with it.

I agree, we introduced L's at 19-20 months and it worked great.
