Milk challenge on Thursday!
« on: June 03, 2013, 19:16:13 pm »
James has a milk challenge on Thursday. It would be great if he passed but deep down I don't think he will. I am nervous about this challenge and will be glad when it is over.

James is challenging fresh milk not baked. If James fails the fresh milk challenge then they will try baked milk later this year. James has had serious reactions to milk in the past and has also experienced anaphylaxis which is why I am worried about this. It is taking place at Royal Manchester Children's Hosital though and the medical staff are amazing.

Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts Mashi.

Only one day to go now and I am so nervous. James is actually looking forward to it though. His attitude about the whole thing is great and I could not be more proud of him.

Good luck! Why are they doing it now? Has he had scratch tests that have showed a decreased reaction?

James's specialist wants to do the milk challenge now to see if James is still allergic to it. The specialist does not like to rely on allergy tests alone especially with children that have atopic eczema as this gives a higher chance of false positives. We know that James has definitely reacted to dairy as he had a severe reaction when he was younger plus he has had contact reactions in the past. The specialist also wants the challenge carried out to see what pathway we go down next. If James passes the challenge then great, if not then depending on the type of reaction will depend on if he meets the criteria to go on the milk desensitization programme or if we move onto a baked milk challenge in a couple of months or so.
