When/How did you switch to a 4 hour routine?
« on: June 06, 2013, 15:21:07 pm »
My little one is 3.5 months old and doing incredibly well on a 3 hour routine.  I know "if its not broken don't fix it" but I am also well aware that a 4 hour routine is strongly recommended by 4 months of age.  My little girl was born on her due date and was/is a average to large baby.

I am finding that she isn't as motivated to eat at 3 hours anymore but still cannot stay awake longer than an hour and fifteen minutes.  How would you address this?  Should I continue feeding her every 3 hours until she naturally extends her wake time, or should I be pushing her to stay awake a little longer?

I have heard that at about 4-5 months babies tend to naturally extend their own wake times, have you found this to be true?  Maybe it is just a little too early and I will have more luck switching a few weeks from now? What should I do about the feeds until then?  Thanks for your advice.

Hi there!
What you are describing is very normal - baby is not interested in feeding so often but can't handle yet a longer A time. What most parents do is stretching the times between the feeds but feed in the middle of A time, so the EASY cycle looks like this: AEASAEAS.
There is more information about the transition here: Time to Transition - 3hr, 3.5hr or 4hr EASY
HTH :).
