What age mini micro scooter
« on: June 16, 2013, 19:08:58 pm »
What age was your little one first able to scoot a scooter?
What age were they actually able to get around on it (ie you could use it instead of a buggy for short trips)?

I can't remember at all with Stan but pretty sure he was over 2.

DS has had a scooter since before 2yo but still only goes up and down the hallway on it.  He doesn't look ready to actually get around anywhere on it, isn't steering, isn't going fast.  Just little pushes up and down and getting the balance.  I've see youtube clips of small toddlers doing amazingly on scooters though (at 2 and 3yo) so I think it also depends on LOs individual skills and character.

Meant to say too we got the EVO rather than the mini micro just a lot cheaper for a first scooter.  if he gets to grips and really enjoys it we'll get the mini micro at that point. The evo is a similar design but a fraction of the cost, I felt it was a good starter to see if he's interested.

My boys were about 2.5 but my next door neighbours dd has only just turned 2 and she's on hers all the time.  Have seen her on the school run on it and that's about a 10 minute walk each way.

X has a micro with a seat which we gave him for Christmas and he is just about starting to get the idea of pushing it along although I have to leave at least 45 minutes for the 0.25 mile to school if I want to get him scooting on it! We haven't really tried him on a standing scooter - the girls have 2-wheelers which he does keep trying but it's not going so well! :P One of my friends has just started bringing her ds2 on the school run with a scooter and he was 2 in November but is pretty steady on it now.

We gave e her scooter for her 2nd birthday, I think, but it wasn't really until the following summer (2.75ish) that she could actually really get anywhere on it, although she started doing the school run on it when m started school so she would only have been just 3.

C is 2.5 and is just starting to get the hang of scooting (we bought it at Christmas but admittedly she's not had much opportunity to use it until fairly recently). She can scoot quite well but can't steer so tends to veer off to the side.

We got dd2 a scooter at about 24mo and she generally pushed it everywhere :P I can't remember exactly when she started Riding it properly but she was whizzing around expertly before 2.5yo.

We started our DS at 18mths, just going up and down the hallway. He got his confidence very early. He is a very physical boy so that helped whereas some of his peers took a lot longer

Eliot's been able to scoot on a micro scooter for about 6 months.  He's 2.25 years now and scoots well round the patio but I wouldn't take it on the school run yet as his steering's not great - he tends to go in a straight line (might be the scooter though - it's Bryony's pink one and about 9 years old!)  Also we live at the top of a steep hill!  I did get the shorter handle with the O ring on the top and the seat, but he only used the seat once.  He has been using the shorter handle until just recently when I put the normal handle back on, as he was playing on one in John Lewis with the normal handle.  He has good gross motor skills - I can't remember how the others compared.
