5month old not acccepting any bottles!!
« on: June 26, 2013, 18:15:13 pm »
Help! My 5.3 month old is constipated most of the time, and the doctor says he HAS to ingest more liquids. The thing is that he has been Brest feed since he was born, and now that I'm trying to give him a bottle he wont take it, from me or any one else. He is great eating solids.
I don't know if it has something to do with it, but he is also waking up 3 times at night.

Hi there. welcome to bw.
How much solids is he eating and what?. He may filling up to much on them and getting dehydrated. Can you cut right back and only offer an hr or so after a feed?
Will he take water?

He has 4onz of fruit at 11am, and 4onz of baby cereal at 7pm, he breast feeds otherwise.
He spits water and cries if i give him juice (any kind) or milk in a bottle.

I agree with Sara and would ease up on the solids (especially the baby cereal which is constipating).  Breast milk or formula has more calories so likely he's filling up on milk during the night to make up for missed calories from the day.

If he has to take in more fluids, can you offer something in a sippy cup?  my DD won't take a bottle but accepted water in a sippy when presented with a sippy at each meal.

Thnk you both! I'll try next meal!
Just one last thing, what do you recomend me to do, so he gets more sleep at night? He falls asleep at 8pm, wakes up for dream feed at 11, then againg at 4am, sometimes at 5 and then at 6:30 :s

So really I'd cut the solids right back, maybe 1/2 each quantity and if you can ditch the cereal and replace with a vegetable ie pumpkin, carrot or sweet potato. Also only offer after milk, 45 mins to 1.5 hrs after. Hopefully he will then be hungry for milk :) space out the feeds too 3.5-4 hrly.

Too much solids and not enough milk can cause constipation which can ause discomfort at night. Yu may find the NF ease once the day feeds increase and bowel movements improve. An you pd earlier at BT to give a longer night?
