im just wondering my daughter takes short naps and has been like this since birth (30-50 mins a lot of the time)

im wondering if with time, and age, your baby has adjusted and started taking longer naps?

my son always took great naps. my daughter at the moment usually has 4. will she just have short naps, forever?!!

my son dropped to 2 naps at around 6-7 months and these would be around an hour and half each.  i cant see my daughter doing this as her naps are too short!

any success stories on lengthening naps?

thanks x

When my DD was a newborn, we'd comment on how long she was napping, sometimes up to 3 hours at a time.  Then around 2 months of age, she started taking 20-40 minute naps and it drove me insane because I was getting nothing done.  That's when I found this website and started doing everything suggested (i.e. darkened room, white noise, swaddle, holding through jolts, etc) and really nothing helped.  I finally decided not to obsess and try to enjoy the rest of my maternity leave.  Then when she was around 4 months old (just in time for me to return to work, lol), she started taking longer naps in her darkened room, 2-3 sleep cycles (so 1 hr 20 min to 2 hrs).

Shortly after that, she started daycare and resumed to taking 40 minute naps (it's like she doesn't know how to transition between sleep cycles in a less than perfect environment).  We decided there is nothing we can do about the daycare situation as she was in a noisy nursery with 8 other babies.  But at home, she continued to take longer naps.

Even today at 14 months, if we're out and about, she'll nap for only 40 minutes at a time in her stroller or carseat.  At daycare, she'll also wake up at the 40 minute mark and they have to pat her back down to finish out the nap.  Fortunately naps at home in her darkened room are still 1 hr 20 min - 2 hours, unassisted (i.e. no patting down, etc).

So this is maybe a mixed success story??

We had short naps until 6 mo. Only from 6 mo naps lenghtened to more than a sleep cycle. I think it was developmental.

Thanks for replys people.

I agree, instead of going crazy and stressing about it im just gonna chill out and let her do what she likes. As i have tried everything and i jist get annoyed when it doesnt work (not at her as it isnt her faul but just in general..)

Mabee when she is a littlw older she may settle down on her own and take better naps but for now i al just going to accept that she is a short napper and stop stressing. Her night time sleep is good so if she is happy i am!

Thank you xx

Dd2 started taking longer naps around 4 months, which is also when we sleep trained and I started setting nap times (going by the clock) with morning, afternoon and catnap. I am now going through it all again with dd3 and it is a little annoying but seriously, I have tried lots and lots of things (increase, decrease A times, white noise, wake to sleep, shushing as soon as she wakes, leaving her alone when she wakes) and none of it has worked so I am too just chilling out at then moment and going with the flow. We went from 5 catnaps to 4 lately (she has been fighting her last 5-5.30 catnap for a few days) and so I have added a little more A time and today we had 4 catnaps with a reasonable bedtime (well 6.30pm). Last night she slept from 6.30-7am (with a few night feeds), which is good in my opinion.

I really truly believe that for some babies it is developmental rather than routine issue. There is not a whole lot more I can do to help her sleep longer. She self settles beautifully and without any help so I know that's not the issue...

Layla :)
