increasing calories in breastmilk
« on: July 14, 2013, 03:40:07 am »
Is it possible to increase the calorie density in breast milk?  Q is 5 months and only weighs 11lb 14oz and the dr is wanting me to increase his calories with formula if I can't get my milk to get more calorie rich.  He is really skinny and has reflux.  we are going to a GI dr but in the mean time I am trying everything I can to keep nursing.  he is nursing 5-6 times a day right now.  I am hesitant to nurse him more because of his reflux and I already have had issues with too much milk.

Any ideas anyone has would be great!

Increasing good fats in your diet can help.

Have you seen any info on block feeding laid back feeding? My oversupply had DS struggling for weight gain until we got it sorted, though you also have the reflux to contend with and that can definitely play a part as LO can develop an aversion to eating as I'm sure you know.

Hope this helps xx

From what I've read it is more likely to be the reflux affecting weight gain than milk. My friends paed made her use formula for the same reason and it actually did not help weight gain at all and and made the reflux symptoms worse.

Have you eliminated any thing from your diet?

What meds is your LO on for the reflux?

Hugs mel! I can't believe you have another LO. Congrats xxx

He is on Prevacid.  Takes it twice a day.  I am dairy and soy free right now.

I have heard the same thing about introducing formula with the reflux.  I really don't need to add that on to my list to deal with.  I will try eating more and I have been running to get ready for a 10k but stopped working out to see if it makes a difference.

I know I am crazy to have another baby, right?? ;). This may be our last unless we adopt.  To much drama this time.  It has been one thing after the other.  But Quinn has the best personality.  Most patient baby I have ever known.

I've heard the lactic acid exercise creates can make the milk taste funny too.
