9 month old gags on thick/texture food
« on: July 12, 2013, 19:16:13 pm »
I hAve been feeding my LO thickened or textured food for the past month and she gags all the time then refuses to eat. So she is still getting puréed foods.
What should I do???

She mainly eats fruits and veggies and egg yolk...all as a purée. She loves that.

Did you go straight from purees to thickened/textured?  Something that worked for us was taking a familiar food we'd normally purée, take 10% of it out then purée as normal.  Mash the 10% you have left (so slightly thicker/more textured than purée) and then stir it back in.  Once she can manage that, change to 80/20% and build up :)

The other thing to try is some finger foods?

Sounds a bit like my LO2.   From quite early on, say seven months, we had her on purées and finger foods, as I mostly go a baby-led weaning road.  She loves purées and she loves finger foods, but she really can't stand the textured, lumpy sort of baby food.  Even now that she's eating just about everything, she still doesn't like lumpy foods.

You can just skip that lumpy stage if it's not working for you.

I've tried mixing only 5% of lumpy foods and she still gags!!!
She is okay with finger foods, she likes that experience I guess but very little she will gag.
Is it okay to skip the lumpy stage and keep purée foods until she eats more full meals as chunks???

Yeah, I would skip lumpy stage. Lots of LOs don't like it. If she is good with finger foods then great!
