9 month old - problems with solids
« on: July 20, 2013, 01:25:54 am »
We have been slowly trying to introduce solids to our LO for the past 3 months, but it has not gotten any easier.  She will not sit in her high chair to be fed, if we put her in the chair she immediately cries.  She normally refuses the spoon, although sometimes she is ok with it.  We cannot figure out why.  There are some days when she will eat a certain food and the next day she refuses that same food.  She likes to eat adult sized food, an apple for example, if we offer it to her whole she will take little bites from it (no skin).  She does not like the purees usually, but sometimes will eat them.  It is so inconsistent as far as what she likes and does not like that we can't pin down exactly what the problem is. We figured that by this time she would be used to solids but she is not.  Also, we are trying to get her off NF but it has been hard since she won't eat solids on a consistent basis

Wake 6am
Eat (BF) 7am
Eat (solids) 8am
Sleep 9:30am
Wake 10:30am
Eat (BF) 11am
Eat (solids) 12pm
Sleep 2pm
Wake 3:30pm
Eat (BF) 4pm
Eat (solids) 5pm
Sleep 7pm

Your routine looks good. Looks like she would do well with lots more finger foods? Maybe it is a control thing she has! Have you considered baby led weaning?

Hi, yes we have tried finger foods, but the food rarely ends up in her mouth, and usually ends up everywhere else.  How do we get her to eat the food instead of playing with it?  Also, on a side note, we had to leave our LO with a babysitter for a few hours one day and we returned to fi d our LO eating calmly from a spoon with no fuss.  Is there any explanation for why a 9 month old would be calmer eating from a stranger than from her parents?  Maybe it was just timing and she happened to be hungry or maybe there is a reason for this?

What is the setting when you feed her? Are you calm or do you think to are fretting about it? She may pick up on it?

If she cries in the high chair have you tried other places to eat? A bumbo? A picnic? Even on your lap?! I would make it as fun and relaxed as possible.

Have you tried getting messy with her? Just let her play with food out of the moment a bit?
