Offer 8wo one side or both?
« on: August 02, 2013, 22:56:25 pm »
The BW book says to feed on one breast at each feeding in order to get the rich hindmilk that comes in at 15 minutes. Does anyone know if there is a range of time when the hindmilk arrives or is it always around 15 min? I see many references on these forums to feeding on both sides so are others following this principle? Any thoughts? I usually feed my 8 wo ~10 minutes on each side but now that I'm reading this I'm wondering if I should change my strategy to just doing one side per feeding. Thanks for any advice!

It really isn't as simple as hindmilk suddenly coming it at a set time. There are fatty hind milk molecules right from the start in what is called foremilk but the fatty molecules increase as the feed goes on.

This website explains it in detail really well. http://kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/basics/foremilk-hindmilk/

I would feed from one side until LO comes off and the breast feels drained and then offer the second side. Then switch sides you start from at each feed.

Yes I've been advised by a LLL consultant to always offer the other breast.

I do exactly as Ali suggested too. He usually empties both at each feed.

Sometimes, if G loses interest in the first breast, I'll switch her to the other and then try to pop her back on the first breast again after she comes off the second breast. Sometimes she'll take a bit more, others not. I've been fretting about this but am trying to follow my baby's lead on this and we're doing ok so far.

Is weight gain, nappy output all fine? If so then I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. Xxx

Another great link about foremilk/hindmilk with a great visual aid to show how gradually the change happens - http://thefunnyshapedwoman.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/hindmilk#
