Share your 19mo routine?
« on: August 05, 2013, 16:43:19 pm »
Just that, really.  Having a bit of trouble settling into a good routine right now and just wondered what was typical at this age?  I'm sure some of our issues are down to nap at nursery being too early (11.45) and often short, but not much I can do about that right now!  Would be good to see what others are doing/have done though :)

Hi Katherine, after coming through the 18 month sleep regression, E started wanting to nap later - at 19 months I think she started resisting a bit more until 1pm/1.30ish. Then she's go down and sleep for up to two hours, then WU and go to bed a little later than previously - 8.00ish. But nursery still do a 12.30nap and she's struggling with this now, she often sleeps a short nap at nursery and the A time is far too long to bed for her - she prefers quite a short afternoon compared to her morning.

E is now napping at 2pm ish at home and BT is 8.30ish for a 7.30ish WU.

Nursery days and nights are not good - lots of NWs for us on Mondays and Tueadays. E has always been quite a poor napper with lots of powering through I think so not sure she's typical.

What does J nap like when she's at home with you?

Erm... Routine... Remind me what one of those is again?! We are all over the place at the moment but if it helps at all little man wakes between 6 and 6:30. On nursery days naps are 12:20/12:30 and we're lucky if he does more than an hour. With me nap is 12 and we get 1:20-1:30. I'm pretty sure I should be pushing nap a little later but he has always coped better with afternoons so it is hard to get him past 12. Bedtime 7:00. Early bedtimes are always really risky as tacking has always been an issue so I tend to only use them if we get an early wake up. As I said it needs a lot to be desired. Oh and little man has always been low sleep needs so a different kettle of fish to J.

Haha yes, "routine".  Well I guess it's a routine of sorts, nap tends to happen at the same time each day.  Nursery is now typically 1h-1h15, at home can be anywhere between 1h40-having to wake her at 2-2.5h.  She even did 3h the other day when DH looked after her!  (I'd have woken her....).  WU is 6.30ish +/- and we aim for 7pm BT but it often takes a while for her to settle.

It's just frustrating because most nights at the moment we have BT silliness and I'm sure we are swinging between OT on nursery days (too long pm A time after a short nap), to UT on home days.  Some days after a long nap we get NWs that seem OT (crying, easy settles) but logically shouldn't be.  And then she'll surprise me sometimes by settling beautifully......today WU 6.45, nap 11.45-12.45, straight out at 6.45pm.  But she was in the foulest mood, I would have sworn OT.  I guess we'll see what the night brings.

Spoke to a friend today with a similar aged LO who has a 1h nap and then BT at 7pm, sleeps through until morning.  Doesn't seem like a lot of sleep to me but that kind of routine seems fairly common!  Am I expecting too much sleep?

Just don't feel I have a handle on this at all at the moment!

You and me both. The rules seem to have gone out the window. We get OT wake ups when he has had a shorter day and a relatively long nap the UT wake ups when he has short naps at nursery and had a super stimulating day. Go figure! I just can't seem to work it out. Today he through in a random 1:45 nap are nursery... What the???! I know this doesn't help but just wanted you to know you aren't alone. Little man is also teething canines so sure this is playing a part too.

joining in here...thought we were flying it until the last week or so....but i think (hope!!!!) that's down to OS from visiting relatives & one busy day after another. (the past 2 mornings we had 6.30am WU & it's taken her 30 mins at BT to fall asleep, even though she lies quietly)
anyway!our usual routine is WU 7am, nap at 12 (1hr50-2hr10 at CM's but can go from 1hr 20-1hr 50 if we're at home), then BT at 7pm. xxx

We are 23mo now but at 19mo Colby was doing Wu 6.30-7, nap 1-3 and BT 7.30/45.  We are just starting to cap the nap at 1.5hrs as he was  waking around or before 6.30 and messing around at BT.

If I do the nap earlier than 1pm we normally only get and UT 1hr10-20 so I try not to. He has always done a shorter last A time. On the days we do playgroup I did the nap 3 or 3.30 for an hour and  he still goes to bed at 8 but is obviously OT.

wu 6.58
a 5h15 (have to be that specific or she does ut/ot naps)
nap 12.15-2.45 (anything less than 2h15 its an ot nap)
bt will aim for 8 today but varies between 6.30-7.45 usually dependant on nap length

does anyone else have a spirited lo so sensitive to ot??!

sorry for hijacking Katherine! im sure that complicates things more! xx

WU - 7 (give or take 15 minutes)
Nap - 12-2:15 (or so, sometime only till 1:45)
BT - 7:30

DS has always had a long end of day. He's at a babysitter all day with 1-2 other children his age. Has a big snack of oatmeal around 11 and a sandwich for lunch when he wakes.

WU 6:30
Nap 1-3
BT 7:30-8

We have recently started having less playing at BT but it's still hit or miss. Some days he still takes up to 1h to fall asleep. Playing outside a lot seems to help make him tired enough to fall asleep quickly though.

Really appreciate everyone contributing :). It looks like longer day/later nap is the way to go at this age, but wow there's so much variation!

Having thought about things again I think UT may be more of an issue for us than I realised.  So far this week she's settled really well both nursery days after a 1h nap and a 12/12.5h day (with one brief NW) but days where she's had a longer nap the BT antics have been worse and the nights more unsettled.  So maybe I need to cap her naps at home a bit shorter than I have been doing?  Can't imagine she'd sustain a 1h nap every day, but maybe capping to 2h at home would be a good idea?  Trying to strike a balance between avoiding UT at BT but allowing some catch up.  Hmmm......
