Need a Solid STTN for my 2 year old (and myself!)
« on: August 06, 2013, 18:21:13 pm »
Hello All! This forum was my saving grace several months ago when I had several sleep issues with our little Cora (now 2y2m). Long story short - we had some troubles with settling down for the night and had multiple NW which I eventually worked through with the help of PUPD. While we've never gotten to perfect, things have been MUCH better. She falls asleep without any trouble for her naps and sleeps anywhere from 1.5-2.5 and sometimes 3 hours. At night she has a little bit of a harder time falling asleep and usually needs me to come back in the room at least once for a lullaby but falls asleep on her own, still.
However, she still pretty consistently wakes up between 3-5am and has trouble falling back asleep on her own. She will call out to me "mommy...where are you?" until I come get her and bring her to bed with me. Once she is in bed with me she will fall right back asleep and sleep until I wake her up in the morning (usually around 8:00).
At first this didn't bother me at all, and I thought if this is what has to happen to get a good nights sleep, then whatever, I'm fine with it. Honestly, most nights I don't mind it for now but I worry that it will continue and become a bad habit and I am feeling that is a bit of a problem that she is technically never really getting a good solid STTN. Also, I wouldn't mind the chance to sleep straight through without waking up to go get her  ;). I'm wondering what I need to do? I imagine at this point it is more of a habit that needs to be broken.
She is a very bright girl and has some good reasoning skills and seems motivated to sleep in her own bed. We'll even talk about getting a treat if she sleeps all night in her bed, but she'll still wake up between 3-5 and call out to me.

A couple small side notes:
1 - She is still in a crib and still has the same hard mattress (supposed to help prevent SIDS) that we had when she was an infant. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it as it doesn't seem super comfy to me. Maybe we could get a mattress pad for her?
2 - My husband is currently getting up around 5am every morning to do work in his office which is pretty close to her room. While he is as quiet as he can be, the dogs wake up with him and make noise as well so I think that might be causing her to wake up sometimes. There's not really anything we can do about this as he is working 2 jobs right now (one out of his home office, and a regular 9-5).
Ex: Last night she woke up around 3:00 and I decided I wasn't going to bring her to bed with me so we did a lullaby and potty (she asked for both) and after a few times she was back down in her bed asleep. However, she woke back up around 5:15 (I think because of all of the movement and commotion outside her door)

Let me know what you think! Thanks  :-*

Hi,
Could you post her daily routine so we can take a look. How long is her nap usually? I would cap to 2 hours at this age tbh, anything over that is likely to take away from her nights at this age.
Does she have a gr-clock or similar so she knows when it is time to get up in the morning?

We don't really have a set daily routine but it usually looks something like

Wake: 8:00
Breakfast
Independent Play
Morning Snack
Playtime, Errands, etc
Lunch
Nap: 1:30-2:00 (Usually 5.5 or 6 hours after wake time)
Her naps range from 1h15 on the short end up to 3 hours on the long end but thet are usually somewhere in the middle around 2h
Wake
Afternoon Snack
Play
Bedtime Routine: Stories, Tub PJs and Putdown
BT: Usually 5.5 hours after she wakes up from her nap. Lately it has ended up being around 9:30-10:00 when she goes down

I don't want naps to interfere with her nighttime sleep but she is such a bear if she gets woken up.
No gr-clock. Not even sure what this is - I'll have to look it up.

Last night was awful - she popped up around 2:30 or so and just wouldn't go back to sleep. I tried in my bed, in her bed - nothing worked. It was like she just wasn't tired at all. She was talking and singing and would say "I'm done with my nappy, mommy". A couple of times when I tried bringing her to bed with me she seemed like she might fall asleep but then she just popped up again. She would even ask to go lay in her big girl bed and lay there for a bit and not be able to go to sleep. Finally at 6am she asked to go lay in her bed and I put her in there and she fell asleep until about 8:30. I am exhausted today. and confused. bahhhh  :-\

sorry, a gro-clock is a clock which lights up when it is time to get up so lo knows when it is ok to get up and when they need to go back to sleep.

I really think you need to cap the nap. I would be aiming for 1.5 hours for at least 4-5 days before making any changes. Yes I do understand how that can be with a lo who does not like to be woken, my DD is similar but it really does sound like UT behaviour to me. I would aim for a nap 6 hours after wake up for 1.5 hours so she will be up 3.30pm and then BT at 8.30pm.

A - 8am
Nap - 2-3.30pm
BT - 8.30pm

what do you think?
