Giving spinach at 7 months?
« on: August 12, 2013, 19:21:06 pm »
Hi there ! So, LO is 7 months and I'm trying to introduce more greens to avoid the orange tinge! The doc said  2 times a week no orange food, I'm still introducing things slowly as she has issues with constipation at the moment!
So DH went shopping and i asked him to pick up some green veg, we sometimes have limited choice so its not always easy, he came home with a bag of Spinach, i thought, 'ohh, great' but after further inspection on google I'm not sure if i should give it or not ???
Anyone got any advice on when i can offer, and how/with what?
Thank you!!

Did google warn you not to give spinach to a 7 month old then? I've never heard of that and it isn't one of the foods that is to be held back (as per guides) until 12 months.  I think the issue about nitrate levels (I just asked google myself) is based around storage of the food, if you make fresh I'm cure it would be fine, there are not guides to avoid spinach in the UK so far as I know.

I would prob try it a few different ways, for instance wash, roughly chop and just steam until it wilts and give LO a dollop of it to explore as finger food.  A little nutmeg is nice mixed through spinach.
If you are doing puree weaning just wilt it in with any other recipes you do and whizz it.
As finger food you can make a (fully cooked) omelet or fritata with spinach and cheese, would be lovely.
Sugar free muffins can be made with spinach too (as a savoury) or how about bean and vegi burgers/fritters?

FWIW Mine wouldn't eat spinach at that age unless it was well hidden but would eat asparagus and green beans.

My LO has always loved baby spinach uncooked - now she's bigger she calls it "leaves" and always asks for them with salad.

Spinach and sweet potato was my DD1s fav food and we gave it from 7 months.

I oven baked the sweet potato. Then steamed the spinach, squashed the water out of it then sautéed it in butter. Then puréed them both together with a little bit of milk. It was an annabel Karmel recipe. She LOVED it.

Wow, i feel like im really behind on the weaning!!! Shes been so constipated that we stuck to pears, papaya and peas for a week, poor thing! So i feel thats set us back a bit, Do i need to still introduce a food every 3 days at this point? She hasn't had any reactions to anything, just hard poops!!
Thanks for all your suggestions, will give them a try!  :)

I never really did the 3 day rule. Recommendations here are just go for it unless there is a history of allergies.  With DD1 we did apple, pear, carrot, sweet potato, porridge as starter foods then pretty quickly we moved on to more meal type foods about 7-8 months. So chicken and apple, beef casserole, salmon, potato and carrot.  Made a batch, purred and froze in ice cube trays!

Helpful hint though... Do not purée normal potatoes. They turn to gloop. I ruined a huge batch of stew doing that. So I used to take the potatoes out and mash them with a fork then purée the rest then mix the potatoes back in.

I had annabels book for DD1 and used lots of her recipes?

Apple, pear and apricot purée worked wonders for constipation here x

Don't worry about us weaning in a seemingly different way, every child has his/her own pace. We also did baby led weaning so E just had everything really from the word go, no three day rule here either. You must do what you and baby are comfortable with :)

You aren't behind, not unless your baby reaches 12 months and still on just milk or puree.  There's no hurry yet and every baby takes to solids in a different way.

I never followed the 3 day rule either and also did BLW so no puree at all.
It's easy to get a bit constipated in the early days as they adjust to solids. I gave a soft prune as finger food, he loved them!  I also found carrots made him a bit too firm unless I balanced it out with another food (like prune) so if you've given lots of orange foods it could be carrots are making her a bit too firm?

It's great she liked it! No more orange baby :)
Are you able to get beans and lentils where you are with the limited choice of vegetables available I wonder if you've explored this option? Mine likes quite a few different types of bean (although  not all, took him a while to like kidney beans for example but he liked others earlier).

It all depends how she will take/like them. I would try whatever the regular local dishes are if beans are common.  Otherwise just make sure they are well soaked/cooked (scum removed regularly from cooking water for something like black eyed beans) etc following safety guidelines for cooking beans (I am not a fan of cooking them, I buy canned!!) and try them as finger food.
Otherwise, mine like bean burgers, just any bean, mashed and made into a fritter (some flour and egg to bind is handy), you can season as you see fit (salt is not good at this age but many other spices can be used to add flavour or a dollop of tomato puree).  You can also mix in left over veg chopped finely or mashed up to make little bean and vegi burgers.  Anything like this is nice served with a yoghurt and mint dip, or again whatever is local. Sorry I have no idea what people eat in Brazil - I am very ignorant! (I'm thinking tacos and burritos but I could be WELL off course!)
Mine likes beans cooked in a stew or curry rather than plain (but will eat them plain) as they take on the flavour from the other ingredients, meat or stock or veg, spices etc.

You can also make lovely bean dips, humus from chick peas and I don't know the name but red kidney bean dip, both lovely served with bread, tortilla wraps, pitta bread etc...or mine likes to eat it with a spoon!

Lentils are great too. Again fritters, burgers, in a curry or stew.

A lazy meal here is a can of baked beans in tom sauce, not super for a 7 month old because of the salt levels, and anyway I'm sure the local recipes are much nicer!  I would leave salt totally out of any recipe you use for now.

hope this helps a little.  Beans are so super nutritious.

All sounds good! ! Thanks for the tips,  and your not ignorant at all,  i wouldn't know local dishes of places unless i lived there!  They do like the salt here though so will stay clear of that,  even my ped said to add a little bit of salt to her food  ???
Ive got a nice long shopping list now,  just need to be a bit more organised so i can plan the week out!  Exciting stuff!
