7.5 month old sick n teething
« on: August 13, 2013, 06:23:27 am »
Hi mummies out there, I have got a question about awake time. My baby is almost 8 month in a week time. She is currently having a cold n teething so she is super clingy n whiny. During this period do I shorten her awake time? She is doing 3 hr awake but currently during this period like this am she slept 1 hr 20 min (0930-1050)by 1315 she is already tired so I put her down at 1345. She is asleep in less than 5 mins but only sleep for 35mins. I am so confused. I medicate her this morning worried that she is in pain. But I didn't want to always keep medicating her. Pls advice

Whenever my girls were sick, I would go by cues as opposed to by the clock... so in your case, I would put her down when she seems tired and just let her sleep and offer a catnap and an earlier bedtime if she's only had a short afternoon nap. Once she's better, you can go back to stretching her A times and getting her to her old routine. I can't advise on medication because I hardly ever gave meds to my girls (unless they were really sick). But I never medicated for teeth as they seemed to have been ok with it... plus teething goes on for a long time and I didn't like to give meds for every single tooth, iykwim.

If she has a cold though, don't think too much about routine and A times and go with whatever helps her recover

HTH :)

Thank you so much. It's so hard to tell if she is tired or not. She is such a happy baby even when sick. She woke up at 1420 this afternoon (35mins nap). Just lying in bed quietly for 30 mins without waiting or me. Tried to offer catnap at 1700 refused. Ebt at 1830 surprising she didn't whine or cry at all but in a very happy spirit. Fell asleep in 5-7 mins after put down. So hard to extend pm nap. Morning I usually get 1.20 rare occasion 2 hr. just wish the pm nap can be at least 1hr long ,,, :'( :'(

Has the pm nap always been short or just recently since she's been sick?

Hugs, its so hard when they're sick :-(

Yes I always have trouble with afternoon nap. But it got worse since she turned 6 mths which I think is developmental and now continue to almost 8 mths maybe due to teething....

She might need a little more A time before afternoon nap to be tired enough to sleep past 45 mins or it may even be a case of cutting her morning nap to 1 hour and hope that she sleeps longer in the afternoon. I am actually finding that by chopping DD3's morning nap to 1 hr is getting us a decent afternoon nap (1.5hrs). Mine is only 4 months and its hard to believe I have to do that but she is in much better mood when she sleeps longer in the afternoon as opposed to having a long morning and shorter pm nap. We also do the catnap though. But once your LO is feeling better we can look at her routine and until then like I said earlier, let her sleep when she seems tired until she's in good spirits again.

Let me know how things are going  :)

Thank you so much for your reply. I have thought of capping morning nap but worried that it won't make a diff n she will miss out on her sleep. She is having runny nose at the moment with teething, she is so u comfortable n whiny. Feel so bad bcos it is mummy and daddy fault for passing down the cold to her. So I gave her so nurofen this few days thinking she might be in pain and uncomfortable. Should I let  her sleep in for her morning nap if she sleeps pass 2 hr? Also we just got back from sydney on sun so she has been waking up at 4 am, 5 am n 0530 thinking it is 6am Perth time.

Again today only 25 mins of pm nap. Slept 2 hr this am so I put her down to sleep at a time of 3hr 15min but only slept 25mins. So after I fed her I try again but she just won't nap. I could see she trying but won't nap. Why?????? Early bt again at 1830 earliest I could do. So another 4hr awake time. I don't understand.

Is she still sick? What time did she wake this morning and what time was the morning and afternoon nap?

She is probably fighting the afternoon nap because her morning nap is too long. I would wake her about 1hr into the morning nap and offer afternoon nap around 3 hrs later and you might find her sleeping longer in the afternoon then. It all depends on whether you're comfortable with that though. If she's sick then obviously you could let her sleep longer in the morning and not worry about the routine so much until she's feeling better. Are her nights affected at all? If she's ok on long morning and short afternoon nap, then you could just continue with that but if you feel that she's still tired in the afternoon, then you might have luck getting a longer afternoon nap out of her if she has a shorter morning nap. Sounds like she's outgrown the catnap!

Hi last night was awful. My little one has never wake up at night before apart for feeding up to 4 mths. Last night she asleep at 1850 then woke up at 2045 staring at the monitor quietly didn't cry or call out for me for 2 hrs finally I went in checked diapper no poo, then give her some med thinking she might in pain. She then puked a little bit change her then she cried for a bit then finally 30mins later went back to sleep. She has never ever done that before wake for 2.5 hrs at night. Maybe her nose r really congested. Don't know y. Then middle if the night she stirred n cried a bit then fall back to sleep.

She was still sick this am. Puked when i gave her meds. This am try to put down for nap at 0945 fell asleep the suddenly wake up crying then back asleep for a few seconds then cry again. Have to go in n cuddled her until she is almost alseep in my arm then she let me put her down then pat pat till asleep finally at 1030. (Woke up at0650 this morning). This has never happened before. Don't understand y. Is it because she is sick? This is her first cold. Poor baby!!! She has never fallen alseep in my arm since 5 weeks old, has always self settled... Apart from last week on holidays on the plane n a couple of times I hold her n rocked her to sleep. So worry I m teaching her rock to sleep  n not self settle anymore. Pls tell me this is just because she is sick now?

She is sleeping so poorly now. I m a FTP, never have a sick baby. R sick babies like this??? All this time since birth even when she napped poorly during the day, it has never ever caused night waking.

Yes, when babies are sick it is ok to cuddle them and put them to sleep in your arms. Poor baby...I really wouldn't worry about doing anything "wrong" at the moment, just try and follow her cues and put her down when she seems like she will sleep and I would probably suggest an earlier bedtime because if she's sleeping poorly during the day, she might need to catch up on some sleep plus my girls whenever they were sick always had an earlier bedtime. Does she have a fever?

Thank you for ur reply. She has no fever just runny nose n congested. Plus teething. Since she woke up this am at 11am only 30mins nap I put her to bed after a time of 2.5hr she slept 1 hr n woke up crying n could settle her back to sleep. I try to see if I can give her an early bedtime of 6pm. Means I would need to reduce her feed n she has to miss out dinner bcos I just feed her at 1515hr. I always find it hard to feed when bedtime so early. Don't know how much to give her. Sometimes I give her too much she will still drink it n puke out lAter.

Do you have a vaporiser? If she's congested, you could put one on for her just before nap time and bedtime and also look at elevating her mattress so that its easier for her to breathe... With regards to food, I would play it by the ear. Don't force her to eat because she might not have the appetite. I would probably do dinner around 5pm and final bottle before bed :-\
