Can you ladies help me tweak her naps?
« on: August 16, 2013, 10:54:02 am »
hi all,

My DD 9 (11 months) will not go to bed at night and wakes during the night as well. I think I need to tweak her naps as she seems to be sleeping too much during the day. I would LOVE your suggestions!
Right now this is her EASY: (I am not putting her A times in. They're the ones between E & S :P )

7.30    E
10.00  S (if i let her she'll sleep easily 3 hours here, I wake her at the 3 hour mark)
1 pm   E
3.30    S (I wake her after an hour, she'll sleep longer if I don't)
4.30    E
7.00    S

As you can see she's sleeping a ton during the day. I really want to move her morning nap length to the afternoon. But am not sure how. She does need a lot of sleep, but now it's interfering with her night sleep and I am getting in this vicous cycle of her sleeping more and more during the day to catch up from lost sleep at night.

She sleeps well! Wake up is 7.30 or sometimes 7.00. She used to sleep well at night to, but not anymore.

I'd push that first nap a bit later if I remember correctly I think my LO did more like 4/4.5 hours A then 1.5-2 hours nap then catnap in afternoon say 30 mins around your LO age!
I sooooo wish mine would nap for 3 hours at lunch lol x

How much later? She gets very whiney if I do, move it by 5-10 min increments? Till what time? How much time does she need between nap and bedtime do you think? Today she slept from 10-2 (i forgot about her....ooops!) and i just put her down at 4.30 for a 30 min snooze, because she was getting tired already and I didn't want a OT baby at bedtime. Does that make sense?

Hi Hester :-*

She is SUPER low on A times for her age, most at 11 months are doing at least 3.5-4hrs. Personally I wouldn't go the 5-10 mins increments route, I'd push her and distract her, and get right to 3.5hrs at least before her first nap. Also at this age I wouldn't let her sleep more than 2hrs at a nap - until she's on one nap (around 15-16 months).

HII!! *waves happily* I will try that tomorrow! We'll go for a walk or something. Still 2 naps though? So;

7.30 wake
11.00 nap
1.00 wake
4.00 nap?
5.00 wake
7.30 bed?

Or push it even further and let her sleep longer, but one nap?

7.30 wake
11.30 nap
2.30 wake
6.30/7 bed?

Yeh def still two naps. One nap at 11 months would be a pretty low sleep needs baby and it seems like E likes her sleep ;)

The first routine looks good. See how you get on with it.

No problem Zoe! We all know how that is :) I will give the first one a try tomorrow. Today she went to bed just fine and hasn't cried yet. I kept her pm snooze to about 30 minutes after her long AM nap and we played HARD :P till 7.30 to make her tired and lots of mommy time. I think it's a combo of UT and a developmental jump with some SA in there. She LOVES her mommy :P The nice thing about #4 is that you don't freak out and know it's just a phase. This too shall pass :P Thanks ladies, I will keep you posted!

She was up in the middle of the night again. Wouldn't settle till I nursed her. Anyway, she woke up at 7.30 and we put her down at 10.30. Right now (12.45) she is still sleeping. I will wake her around 1 pm (2.5 hour nap)

Will keep you posted!!

Put her to bed at 4 again, but she didn't sleep. Put her to bed at 7, she went straight to sleep but woke up at 7.30 and wouldn't settle, so we took her out and put her back in around 8. She's still sleeping now (11.30) so let's hope and pray for a good night.

Fingers crossed. With both of mine, if they had a long morning nap they would be inclined to skip the pm nap entirely leaving too long to bed, so I had to do a short am and long pm nap instead.

Well, she slept all night! HOORAY! But today was a mess.

6.30 wake
9.30 nap
10.45 wake
12.30 nap (she was super whiney, so we thought, since she had a short nap (for her) she needed one sooner, we were wrong)
1.30 wake
We tried a nap arounf 3, but that didn't work, so we went for a walk with her in the carrier, she didn't sleep in the carrier.
4.30 nap (we let her sleep to prevent OT, since she was getting OT)
6.00 wake
8.00 bed ~ no go, crying, she came out
8.45 bed ~ started crying, but settled. Right now still sleeping (10.10)

So it was a bit messy today, but I'll take it, any change takes time :)

Changing the nap times around, Would you cap the morning nap then? Doesn't she get OT too soon then?

No, because you reduce the next A time.

So you would do a normal first A time, then a short nap, then a short A time, then a long nap.

For example:
7.00 wake
10.30 nap ~45-60 mins
11.15 wake
1.30 nap
3.30 wake
7pm bed

Does that make sense?
