Tons of Wind! What makes this happen and what to do?
« on: August 20, 2013, 12:08:57 pm »
My DS is 6 weeks old and has a good, what I would consider normal amount of burps and gas a day, but last night was so bad! Any BTDT advice and remedies would be greatly appreciated. Mylicon was not helping last night and she was in so much pain  :'(

I just tried to get as many burps out as possible, did some baby massage on tummy and lay them on their sides to sleep (which I know isn't advised, but both were much more comfortable that way).

Some of it's a matter of time, as you know, but sometimes they'll take in some excess air when feeding it the latch isn't exactly what it could be.  But sometimes even the best latch ends with a windy baby :-\

I know some people have success with frequent winding during a feed rather than just one or two.

It can also be a result of gulping if the flow is very fast. Might that be an issue? Laying back to nurse can help if so.

Massage can also help. There are details in this thread Massage, Colic, and recognising various cries info.

Thanks!

Went to pedi. today, and we talked about Mylicon and gripe water, and she said the only thing that has been shown in a randomized controlled trial to help vs. placebo is probiotic, like Biogaia.

I have been doing massage, cycling her legs, and the wind is coming out, but it keeps on coming!

I do think my flow is fast. Do you mean lying on my back?

I'll check out that link.

No by laid back nursing I mean sitting up but reclining so baby is almost facing down. Here is a link with more info although I never laid back quite as much as in the diagram. http://www.llli.org/faq/positioning.html

Nini, there's plenty of good stuff in your milk without adding anything else in at this stage ;)

If you're exclusively BF your LO and are not putting anything else into their mouth, you don't need to use a probiotic.  There are plenty of good bacteria both in her stomach and your milk.  Unless, of course, you want to add something extra to her virgin gut.

Gotcha. What's your thoughts on 1) Mylicon (simethicone) and 2) gripe water?

Listening in as we are struggling with this too. The GP told me not to use infacol with the ranitidine but this week we seem to have had nights and nights with her writhing around with gas. Nothing has changed in my diet though...

When T had terrible colic this was the one thing that worked well. Is pricey but he was terrible! And it helped ;) http://www.coliccalm.com (tummy calm is good too)
Otherwise gripe water, gas drops ie infacol or oval, lots of massage and winding. :-*
This winding technique worked a charm for my first!

Infacol can help (Mylicon), but can also make the wind bubbles SO big that they push up milk as well as the wind, which isn't ideal.  DS's paed advised against it as he described it as "too harsh" for small LOs.

Gripe water....well, the jury's out.  We used to give DD a dose in the evening and that was it.  I think it did help her move a bit of wind.

Simethicone seems to either help a lot, or make things a little worse...so IMO they are worth a try IF you think your LO is struggling. The cost of them here isn't much so it was worth having it in the cupboard YK.

Agree with Amanda re probiotics. Unless your LO needs them for meds (ie reflux) or has gut issues then I wouldn't bother if EBF. :-*
