14 month old waking lots at night...what gives?!
« on: August 21, 2013, 20:13:43 pm »
So my DD is 14 months old and up until about 10 days ago was sleeping through the night on average about 11 hours. She is now waking up for seemingly no reason. It started with just once a night but the past 2 nights have been awful, like I've lost track of how many times she woke up, awful. She throws her lovie out of the crib which means she wont settle herself and is just generally mad and crying. The normal gentle reassurance and lying her back down doesn't work and I've had to pick her up to calm her down. Last night I even laid down with her on her bedroom floor for an hour, she finally fell asleep at 3amish and slept until 930. I would have brought jer into our bed but my hubby works super early and I didnt want to disturb him. I've been thinking about it and I think there may be several factors that could be making her wake but I'm just not sure which one and how to get back on track.

We are working on the 2-1 transition and recently starting capping her am nap to 20 mins from 30 mins about 2 weeks ago, with that I reduced her pm A time to 3 hours and that seemed to go well. She sleeps about 2+ hours in the afternoon.

I think she's hit a mental leap as she is way more vocal, notices things that she didn't before, is a bit scard of things that didn't faze her before, like construction noises and seems to understand more simple commands she hears.

We were out of town for 4 nights and stayed in 3 different places. She was ok, but not great, the first 2 nights (1 wake up per night) but it went downhill after that. I tried really really hard to stick to her schedule but she ended up to bed a little bit later than normal a couple of times and was waking up earlier than normal.

Here is her approximate schedule for the past few days...

W 630
A 4hr10m
S 20 min
A 3hr
S 2hr
A 3.5hr - 4hr
B 8ish

I'm pretty sure she isn't teething but she did get her 12mo shots last nigh although I don't think they are a factor as things were derailing before that.

Today we were quietly reading a book about a half hour before her nap and she starting falling asleep so I put her down for her nap so I know she's exhausted!

I would love any feedback as I know something's going on I just can't figure it out! I'm sure he answer is screaming at me but I'm so exhausted these last few days I can't seem to think straight.

Thank you!!

Hey!

Thats a pretty long day at 13.5h, It may be that your LO could do with an earlier BT, just to help her cope with the transition to 1 nap?

So with a 6.30 WU, perhaps aim for her to be asleep at 7.15, maybe 7.30 at the latest.

what do you think?

I think that's a great place to start! Today is a bit of a weird one as she will only have 1 nap due to the late wake up this morning, but thankfully its a good one. She went down at 1pm and its now 320 and she's still sleeping...I'm thinking of aiming for a 7pm bedtime. Do you think that's ok?

That morning she woke up at 930am but she didn't actually fall asleep until 330am, she had woken up every 45 min before that so she was exhausted. She only had 1 nap because of the late wake up and we put her down at about 715. She cried on and off until about 1030pm (we would go in adn reassure and rub her back but every time we left she'd start up again) and then slept straight through until 730am. Her day today looks like this...

W 730
A 4hr
S 1130
W1150
A 3hr
W 430
Bed 745ish

I feel like we may be getting back on track but maybe I'm just being hopeful? Does this schedule look a bit better?

Thanks so much for the support and encouragement!
We went ahead and threw another wrench into everything this weekend by going camping (bad idea) and she fought every nap and BT and has woken up at 6am or earlier 4 mornings straight. I guess I really wanted to make things more challenging! I also discovered that she was in fact teething as she has a new molar poking through. I'm not sure that was a big factor though, but I'm sure it hasn't helped.
She is waking less at night, only 1 time for the last couple of nights, so that's a positive. Here's our day yesterday...

6am W
4hr10min A
1010am S
1030 W
3hr A
130 S (about 20min to settle)
340 W
7 Bedtime

I'll just keep on keeping on! It's so hard not to doubt what you're doing when things suddenly change!

I know, but just remember nobody knows your LO as you do. Trust your judgement, look how far its got you already! Good luck and keep us posted x
