10 mo how many feeds?
« on: August 27, 2013, 18:42:51 pm »
Hi I wonder if anyone can offer any advice. My lo is 10 mo, bf & blw. Easy is great:

E 0700, solids 0800
A 0700-1100
S 1100-1300
E 1300, solids 1330
A 1300-1615
S 1615-1715
Now refusing 1715 bf
1730 solids
1900 9oz formula before bed @ 1930

My query is should I try to fit in another bf somewhere? And if so where?  He is only having 2 a day more often than not now. He does have 1-2 bottles in night. I'd like to continue bf but he doesn't seem bothered. Should I just accept how it is & just continue with the two bf? Will  my supple dwindle? Approximately how many milk feeds is normal now? Many thanks :-)

Most 10mo are on 4 BFs although some may have dropped down early to 3 if big on solids. Some may still need a BF at night but that would likely be a dreamfeed or EW and back to sleep.  2 full bottles seems a lot especially if it is not breast milk.
What is in the bottles you are giving at night?  I would try to switch those calories to the day time feeds and wean off those NFs. I wouldn't drop day feeds down before night feeds or she really well be hungry in the night.
Unless you havehad supply issues your silly should just balance out to what she is taking from the breast.

If I was going to add a feed (or 2) to that day, I think I'd probably try to squeeze in a feed before the naps (without feeding to sleep), otherwise, certainly in the morning, you've got a really long gap from the 7am to 1pm feeds.

Thanks for replies. He has 6-9 oz at either 11pm or 3am ish. He sometimes also wakes at 5ish if hes had bottle at 11, I bf then. I have tried upping bf during the day but he's too distracted & doesn't seem bothered (unless feeding to sleep). No supply issues. Should I feed at 11? or at 3. He does seem hungry & won't settle if I offer water. Any tips then on convincing him to bf more in the day? If I bf before nap I'm worried it will turn into prop as we have already stopped this? Many thanks x

We used to do around 7, 10.30, 2.30, 6pm(BT), but you might want to adjust a little based on your current routine.

Thanks fiver that sounds possible. Should I be offering solids before or after bf? How long a gap between solids/bf should I leave? :-)

Also can anyone advise how many feeds he will be having when he reaches 1 year? I know they are all different but just a guide would help so I can plan for when I go back to work. Thanks x

At 10m I was still doing a BF before breakfast.  The BFs at 10.30/2.30 were far enough away from a 12 lunch and 4.30 dinner that I wasn't worried about that.  And the 6pm for us was the BT feed, so sort of fell after solids, but sort of not, if that makes sense?

As for feeds at 12m, you may well be down to 2 or 3 by then.  We were doing a WU, mid morning and BT feed then which went down to just WU and BT a couple of months later, but each LO/BF relationship is different.

My DS1 was on 3 BFs at 12mo plus an occasional one at night which i weaned at 12.5mo and DS2 was on 4 which included a 5am one after which he went back to sleep which I weaned at 15mo and did a morning wake up one instead.

With ds1 we dropped to 2 feeds around 14mo I think and then one feed at 25mo before weaning completely at 26mo. With DS2 he was on 4 feeds until about 18mo and then we dropped the wake up morning feed around 22mo and are still doing BT and occasionally (about 3 days a week) a lunchtime feed before nap as well.
