Troubles with oatmeal?
« on: August 30, 2013, 18:26:24 pm »
So it seems dd2 (almost 6 months) has a bit of a problem with oatmeal :(  It made her poop very loose, and a little mucousy, and she was really angry trying to poop.  I gave it to her quite a few times before I realized it was a problem, so im feeling pretty guilty right now, and im worried ive caused some permanent damage :(

So, is it possibly because of the gluten in oatmeal?  Is it something she can grow out of?  Should I make sure she doesnt have anything containung gluten for awhile? She is almost 6 months and im sure the ped is going to tell me to go ahead with other foods...but I dont want to give her something if its going to cause trouble for her tummy :(

Hi, I would just give it a miss for a while and then try again. She is young and may just be struggling to digest it x

Oats dont actually contain gluten, though they generally do get cross contamination from it in processing. You can buy "gluten free" oats that aare okay. I would guess that rather than an issue with gluten it is probably just digestion. I skipped cereals entirely with dd 2 at that age as she couldnt handle them.

Thanks ladies :)  I got the only brand of oatmeal that I could find without milk (dd2 is lactose intolerant) but I didnt check for the "may contail wheat/gluten" line!  I will check her foods from now on to be sure :)  And no oatmeal for awhile!

Heidi -I'm giving more fruits and veggies with dd2 as well, so she really doesnt get much cereal at all.  She doesnt like the bland taste anyway, which I guess is s good sign that she has a well developed palate  ;)
