Don't know where to turn. Nap trouble.
« on: August 31, 2013, 01:56:04 am »
Hi again,
I wrote earlier in the week regarding my almost 13 month old who seems to be havig a real change in schedule.
He was doing:
7 wake up
10-11 sleep (sometimes 1130)
2-4 sleep
Bedtime 730

All hell has broken loose over here. He started to resist his aft nap. It wasn't him just crying but him going ballistic screaming and standing up etc.
I pushed his second nap back to 3pm an that seemed to work sometimes but not all times.
He would sleep until 430 and I would wake him up if he wasn't awake at this time anyway. So then his bedtime became 8-830. Then he was waking at 830 so we went with that for a little while.
Problem being is that when he started waking at 830am his bedtime, with two naps was getting way too late for him and for us toget dinner done and any work completed (as I work from home when he goes to bed).
So we tried one nap one day:
He woke at 830
Sleep at 1230-330
Bed at 730
So we figured let's stick to one nap. Then we tried that same thing again except he woke at 730 that morning so I tried 4hours later like the previous day and put him down at
1130am. He slept only until 1245. He then refuse a second nap and fell asleep in the stroller for 20-30 mins. Then he wouldn't go to bed at all and screamed for
Half hour and I eventually had to nurse him to sleep which I haven't done before sleep training.
So I'm sure he is totally confused. He was sleep trained by a Timedcry it out which I know none of you believe on this site but after Shh Shh and pick up put down for a week I had to try it. It worked really well for My lo after four days and he has been a dream sleeper until now
Really.
Well he probably still is a dream sleeper but I just can't get this schedule back on track. Tonight
He cried and wouldn't settle and I got him up and my husband is now reading books to him. He woke at 830 and its now 7pm and he's slept 30 mins all day.
Neither of us can comfort him when he gets this OT and starts crying at bedtime.

I'm feeling so miserable because I'm lost and I don't know what to do for him. It breaks my heart to hear him cry but going in to his room and picking him up and putting him back makes it so so much worse.
My husband is puttin him back into his crib as we speak and he is screaming.
Please help!

Thanks

(((Big hugs))) It is heart breaking I know but given hes been a dream sleeper you'll be able to fix this.

Looking at your post I would say that your DS is probably ready for 1 nap. I think when you tried it he perhaps had too short a day (11hours) for the amount if DTS he had (3h) and perhaps was UT at BT but now us clearly OT.

I think you need to try and combat the OT first and then tackle trying to get his routine back on track.

Can you post what his day has been like in EAS format over the last 2/3days and we can perhaps see what's going on?

Also any sign of teeth or any other significant changes that could be affecting his sleep?

Hena

Hi Hena,
Ok so it's been better over the last two days and this is what I did. Instead of determining his wake up time by the time he went to bed ie: wake up 830 if he went to bed at 830, wake up 730 if e went to bed at 730, I have been consistent in waking him at 730 regardless if he went to be at 830. So his nighttime is now 11 hours but he does better in day.
Wake up 730
Sleep 1030-1145 I wake him
Sleep 3-430 I will wake him but he has been waking on own
Bedtime 815-830
I would prefer one nap and get his bedtime to 630-7 where it was before he extended his awake time but I don't think he is quite there yet so maybe this will work until he tells me he is ready to stay awake from 730-1200-1230?

Just means I can't get as much work done in the evening.
What do you think?

It sounds to me as though you've done a Stirling job of getting your LO back on track. Do you think he is ready for one nap? If so then you push the nap out to 11am (uncapped) and do the earlier BT if 6.30 until you think he can handle a longer morning A and then push BT out to 7pm iykwim.

If you are going to try that then I wouldn't do it on one go. I'd push out by 15m and hold for a few days to make sure your LO can handle it.

Equally if you don't think your LO is ready for 1nap or are happy with things as they are then keep in as you are until it becomes apparent your LO needs a change.

Thanks so much for your response. It's been going well the past few weeks. He wakes at 740, first nap 1030-1130 (I wake him often). Then second nap 3-430 (wake him often as well) and then bed by 745 usually.
He is doing well so I'm not goin to rush te transition until he tells me something is wrong (he usually doesn't cry so I know when he starts I need to adjust something).
Thanks again. So nice to bounce your concerns off someone.
