problem with chocolate..??
« on: August 26, 2013, 18:39:47 pm »
The dietitian asked us to keep a detailed food diary for the next 3 weeks to see what might be causing issues with Henry. Background is he is being treated for chronic constipation which manifests in soiling (accidents)
We went dairy free for 8 weeks but there was no real difference but one thing we noticed was a reaction to having a chocolate cake when we re-introduced (lots of runny poo/mucous). Today he had a chocolate ice cream and a small piece of chocolate cake at a party at my parents and tonight he has had 2 runny poos (sorry TMI)

So what do you think it is likely to be - the cocoa so the chocolate element or the cow milk? I am pretty sure there would have been cow's milk in something he had on Sat and he was fine after that.

Jut wondered if anyone has any ideas..
thanks

What about if you make sure there is no dairy in his food and put a bit of cocoa powder in whatever he is eating that can disguise it to see?  There could be so many things in chocolate cake and icecream.  Were they homemade?

I quite often put cocoa powder in a chilli/bolognese type sauce - might be a good place to hide it if he eats something like that?

Chocolate is a culprit for migraine and IBS sufferers. Not sure why though  ???

Ice cream is just as nasty as straight cow's milk in terms of MPI issues...  the cake would have been baked though which leads me to think less of the milk component in that case...

My mum and sister are both allergic to chocolate. Mum gets migraines and my sister suffers with sickness and diarrhoea (although both have cut it completely out of their diet so the last incident was years ago). It was suggests that my sister may well have 'grown out' of her symptoms and developed a migraine type reaction to it as she grew up.

DD is being treated for encopresis. The jury is still out on how much dairy she can have (I'd prefer to just cut it but she is not *too* bad at the amount she does have at the mo and I just don't have my DH's by in) and she was very mpi as a baby. Chocolate does give us a really good outcome. Chocolate in --> chocolate out. :-X it's awful. Given we dont get a reaction like that with just the milk that would be in a non-chocolate cake, but do with a chocolate cake, I definitely think it's the cocoa for her.
