Elimination Diet - reintroducing dairy***
« on: September 25, 2013, 00:54:57 am »
I'm eliminating dairy because DD has serious wind! Nothing really else.

I am a big cereal, cream in my coffee, cheese and ice cream eater. Which of course I will eliminate, and we eat dairy free bread, but will things like breadcrumbs, that say contain milk, negate the effect of eliminating major sources of dairy?

I might starve!  ;) ;) ;)

When I went dairy free I did everything including trace amounts.  Totally not what you were asking but I know I found breadcrumbs that were supprisingly dairy (and soy) free.  Maybe it was the progresso panko ones?

Thanks! I've used those before.

Did you eliminate dairy for wind or something more severe?

I would eliminate it all to make completely sure and then after a time try those really hidden ones again. That is my plan anyways! Oh and it is also in a lot of processed meats too...sandwich meat, hotdogs etc.  DD2 is dairy free so I already have it mostly down pat.

Both of the older girls were/are mpi so not too surprising if that is the case again!

And does it really only take a few day (3-4) to see an improvement?

Yeah it can take awhile! I dont eat a lot of dairy and so for us it was about a week as I just had to find an alternate for my coffee cream and restrain myself from eating cheese!

I haven't done elimination but just wanted to say that home made bread crumbs are easy if you have a whizzer. You can also freeze them and use them from frozen.
If you find a dairy free cracker you can whizz those and use a crunchy coating alternative to breadcrumbs, very tasty, I save up all the broken crackers in a tub for making into crumb.

Thanks creations!

My DD's only sign of MPI is wind, is this typical for LOs with MPI or do they usually have more symptoms?

Do you guys know the mechanism of this disease, as in what is happening that takes a few days - 3 weeks to see improvement? Does it take that long for my body to clear dairy, or is the process in the gut of the LO?

Both..it takes time to clear your body and theirs. For us it was wind, nasty spit up/vomit, and mucousy diapers for M but S had severe constipation. Hadnt gotten to the nasty poop yet with E but possibly because I was on top of eliminating or she isnt as sensitive as her sisters were.

I use Helman's Lite mayo, and it says Natural flavoring, would you use it?

Dairy is one of the top allergens so if it is in a food product it has to be on the label in plain english (I believe US rules are quite similar to ours on this) so the mayo should be fine. I dont think I have encountered mayo with dairy ever.

Oh if you want a comprhensive list check http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org  they have lists of things to look out for for each allergen. If I find the dairy one later I can link it specifically.
