Almost 6 months old need help with solids
« on: October 04, 2013, 02:41:46 am »
Hi,
my almost six month old boy started solids around five months. He seems to be more hungry. When should I give him solids and breast milk, and how do I produce more milk for his growth spurts?

e: 7 solids then breast milk
s:9-1130
e:1145 solids then breast milk
s: 145-315
e:330 breast milk
s:530-6
e:715 breast milk
s:830
(one night feed)

Hi there and welcome to the BW :)

I do milk first and then solids an hour later. If it were me, I would swap it around as milk has much more calories than solids and solids are only for try and fun at this stage. Our routine is:

6.30am - wake and breast (offer both sides but sometimes she'll only have 1, depending on when she had the last night feed)
7.30am - solids (1-2 table spoons of porridge mixed with some prunes) or 1/4 white bread with avocado
9.30-11am - sleep
11am - wake and breast (both sides)
12pm - solids (ice cube of veg and ice cube of fruit)
2-3.30pm - afternoon nap
3.30 - breast feed (both sides)
5pm - breast feed (one side)
bath and bedtime routine
6-6.30pm - breast feed (offer both but usually only has 1 side) and bed
0-2 night feeds

With regards to producing more milk, your body will produce more based on what the baby needs. I usually offer both sides and then go back to the 1st side if I feel that mine wants more but I am pretty sure that during the GS period, she just takes more in, which signals to the body to produce more.

HTH a little :)

I agree with Layla. At this age my DD had only just started weaning but we most definately out milk first as that is what LOs get theor calories/food from at this age.

I just carried on with the feeding and added in solid food, my body had no problems producing milk as per my LOs needs. You have to think before introducing solids your LOs milk needs were changeable and your body adjusted accordingly. It will be no different now.
